Two players made their varsity debut.
They helped the Patriots get their first win.
Gabi Paxson and Jazzmine Howell each played their first varsity round Monday, helping the Jay County High School girls golf team beat the Anderson Indians 231-236 at Portland Golf Club.
It was the first win of the season for the Patriots, who opened the year with three straight losses.
Mackenzie Parks led the Patriots (1-3) with a score of 54. Paxson shot 57 in her debut to finish second on the team. Eden Basford was two strokes behind. Howell completed the team score by shooting 61 in her first varsity round.
Madalyn Garringer also competed but did not factor into the team score. She finished with a 64.
Stars win opener
HARTFORD CITY — The South Adams volleyball team opened its season Monday with a commanding three-set victory over the host Blackford Bruins, 25-6, 25-11, 25-10.
Madi Wurster and Addie Wanner led South Adams (1-0) on the offensive end. Wurster totaled seven kills while Wanner had six kills. Both also had a pair of blocks.
Shania Neal posted a team-high eight digs, and Julia Grabau collected 16 assists.
Lydia Loshe tallied three kills, two assists and two aces, and Shaelynn Bowman tallied two kills. Hannah Dull and Wurster had three aces apiece.
South Adam’s junior varsity team also won, 25-14, 25-6.
Savannah Alberson had a team-high five kills to go with her solo dig. Josie Grabau recorded eight assists and three digs, while Gabriella Bailey totaled three kills and three aces.
