FAIRMOUNT — One set away from defeat, the Patriots were able to take one from the Argylls.
They weren’t able to parlay it into a season-opening victory.
Jay County High School’s volleyball team met the Madison-Grant Argylls in the first match of the year, losing 26-24, 25-18,24-26 , 25-22 Tuesday.
Senior Kaelyn Weaver led the Patriots offensively with nine kills. Freshman Natalie Miles tallied seven kills, while sisters Olivia (sophomore) and Alana (freshman) Kunkler had five kills each.
Chloe Trissel, a senior, led the defense with 16 digs, and Maggie Pryor was second on the team with 11. Alana Kunkler and Miles both recorded four blocks, and Weaver chipped in three blocks.
Kailee Denney totaled 21 assists.
Stars edge Saints
GENEVA — South Adams’girls golf team edged the Bishop Dwenger Saints on Tuesday, 194-199 at Golf Club of the Limberlost.
Kaiti Gorrell shot a season-low 40, including a birdie on the par-4 second hole. She also madepar four times to lead the Starfires (2-2). Becah Schwartz reached the 40s for the first time this year as she finished with 49. Allyson Schwartz was two strokes behind at 51, and Millie Gaskill shot 54 to complete the team score for South Adams.
Shayla Welch also competed but did not factor into the team score. She shot 59.
Dwenger’s Madeline Pape earned match medalist with 1-over-par 37.
Tennis drops opener
BERNE — The South Adams boys tennis team dropped its season opener on Tuesday, losing 4-1 to the visiting Winchester Golden Falcons.
Senior DavidMuselman earned the only victory for the Starfires (0-1), defeating Trey Graft 6-2, 6-4 in their No. 1 singles match. Cam Stevens fell to Justin McAllister 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and James Fosnaugh lost 7-5, 6-1 to Nick Dunica at No. 3 singles.
South Adams’ No. 1 doubles team of Wes Stout and Paul Stuckey lost to Thadd Legear and Alex Pegg 6-0, 6-0.
Soccer falls
MUNCIE — Jay County’sboys soccer team fell to the Muncie Central Bearcats 3-0 on Tuesday in the first match of the year for both teams.
Muncie Central (1-0) struck in the first half for the only goal itneeded, and held a 1-0 score heading into halftime.
After the intermission, Jay County (0-1) still wasn’t able to find the back of the net while the Bearcats tacked on two more goals.
The Patriot junior varsity team also lost, 1-0.
Jay County host Allen County Athletic Conference rival Heritage Patriots at 5 p.m. Thursday in its home opener.
