WOODBURN — The Patriots are in the win column.
Jay County High School’s boys soccer team’s first-half goal propelled it to a 3-2 victory over the host Woodlan Warriors on Monday.
The Patriots move to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in Allen County Athletic Conference play.
Daniel Fugiett notched his second goal of the season to put the Patriots ahead in the first half. Despite a pair of goals by the Warriors in the final 40 minutes, Jay County matched the home team to keep the advantage.
Derrian Riojas got his first goal of the season in the second half, and freshman Giovanni Perod netted his first career goal.
Jay County travels to take on its new sectional rival, New Castle, at 7 p.m. tonight.
Golf places third
Jay County’s girls golf team finished third on Monday at Portland Golf Club in a three-team meet with the Monroe Central Golden Bears and Bluffton Tigers.
The Golden Bears totaled 223 to finish first, while the Tigers shot 234 to finish as the runners-up. Jay County totaled 242 for third.
Madalyn Garringer led the Patriots with a 51. Jazzmine Howell was second on the team with 62, and Mackenzie Parks shot 64 for the third-best JCHS score. Eden Basford’s 65 completed the team total.
Gabi Paxson also competed but did not factor into the team score. She shot 68.
Jay County’s junior varsity team won, 259-276. Erika Heitkamp led JCHS with 59 as Abby Huey and Raquel Wehrly both totaled 63. Sierra Caster’s 74 was fourth on the team.
Jay drops opener
Jay County’s junior varsity football team fell to the Blackford Bruins on Monday, 30-28.
Freshman quarterback Landon Grimes threw three touchdowns, two of which went to Elijah Corwin and the other to Logan Duran.
Bailey Cox found the end zone on the ground for the Patriots.
Duran and Corwin also had interceptions for Jay County (0-1), which hosts Delta at 6 p.m. on Monday.
