DECATUR — Jay County High School’s boys cross country team finished eighth Tuesday in its season opener, the Bellmont Invitational.
The host Braves won with a team score of 40 points. New Haven was runner-up with 47 points, and Heritage scored 79 points for third.
Jay County had 218 to finish last out of eight scoring teams.
The JCHS girls team did not have enough to qualify for a team score.
Alex LeMaster was the lead JCHS boy, as he finished in 19 minutes, 46 seconds, for 36th place. Mitchell Winner was 43rd in 20:06, and Tayler Smeltzer had a time of 21:07 for 59th.
Mason Winner ended in 22:11 for 66th place, and Nathanael Day completed the team total by crossing the finish in 22:54 for 71st.
JCHS freshman Sophia Fugiett finished fourth overall in her debut. She had a time of 21:45 as the top Patriot performer. Lita Chowning was 44th in 28:02, Ella Roessner placed 53rd in 30:04 and Catherine Stafford was 64th in 33:54.
Also competing for the JCHS boys were Matthew Minnich (81st), Kaleb Weaver (83rd) and Dylan Harris (89th).

NEW CASTLE — A day after recording its first win of the season, the Jay County boys soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in a 5-0 loss to the New Castle Trojans.
New Castle, which is now a Class 2A sectional rival of Jay County (1-3), scored three goals in the first half, and tacked on two more in the final 40 minutes for the win.
The JCHS junior varsity team also lost, 3-0.
SA beats Panthers
BERNE — The South Adams volleyball team returned to its winning ways Tuesday by sweeping the Eastbrook Panthers, 25-16, 25-10, 25-18.
The Starfires (5-2) had won its first four matches of the season before dropping consecutive contests in the North Miami Invitational on Saturday.
Addie Wanner and Madi Wurster led the Starfires (5-2) offensively as they totaled 12 and 11 kills respectively. Wanner also had four aces, two digs and a pair of blocks, as Wurster notched four digs, two blocks and an ace.
Lydia Loshe chipped in four kills and five digs, while Jade Farlow had three kills.
Shania Neal’s nine digs were tops on the team, and Julia Grabau collected 27 assists.
The South Adams junior varsity team also won, 25-15, 25-8.
Kaitlyn Hamrick had seven kills, while Gabriella Bailey and Savannah Alberson both finished with four kills. Josie Grabau tallied 21 assists.

BERNE — South Adams’ girls soccer team was at the wrong end of a 7-1 score as it fell to the Bellmont Squaws on Tuesday.
Madi Smith scored the only goal for the Starfires, who fell to 1-2 on the season.
Jenna Myers made 16 saves in goal for South Adams, which returns to action Thursday as it hosts the Wapahani Raiders.

CELINA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery boys golf team lost to the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays on Tuesday, 179-203, at Mercer County Elks Golf Course.
Harrison Kaup tied for match medalist honors as he shot 7-over-par 42. Grant Knapke was second on the team with 51, and Derek Lochtefeld shot 54 to finish third. Carson Rammel’s 56 completed the Tribe’s team score.
Dylan Ranly and Seth Lochtefeld also competed but did not factor into the team score. They finished with 59 and 70 respectively.
Indians fall to Trojans
ARCANUM, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s girls golf team fell at the hands of the Arcanum Trojans 210-246 at Beechwood Golf Course on Tuesday.
Alli Vaughn led the Indians by firing a 57, two strokes ahead of Kristen Keller. Eryn Litmer was third on the team with 63, and Sophie Timmerman rounded out the FRHS team score by shooting 67.
Shelby Stammen (73) and Devin Jutte (74) also competed, but they did not factor into the team score.

VERSAILLES, Ohio — The Fort Recovery Middle School volleyball teams swept the Versailles Tigers on Tuesday.
The FRMS eighth graders won 25-19, 25-19, while the seventh graders earned a 25-6 25-19 win.
Whitley Rammel had 13 kills to lead the eighth graders. Marissa Gaerke was second with eight kills, and Melissa Laux tallied five kills. Aubrey Knapke and Gaerke had seven and six digs respectively, as Madilyn Knapke had 17 assists.
Abby Knapke led the seventh graders with five kills, and Faith Wendel tallied three kills to go with her three assists. Allysen Fullenkamp had a team-high eight aces.
