A pair of second-quarter turnovers led to points at the other end and the Jay County High School junior varsity football team was unable to reach the end zone in a 46-0 loss Monday to the Delta Eagles.
After leading 16-0 heading into the second quarter, Delta capitalized on both a fumble and an interception, turning each takeaway into points to stake a 32-0 lead at halftime.
The Eagles scored six points in each of the final two quarters while also keeping the Patriots (0-2) off the scoreboard.
Bailey Cox had 150 yards rushing to lead Jay County. Landon Grimes completed one of his six pass attempts for 10 yards. Logan Duran had a first-half interception.
Spikers sweep
LYNN — Jay County’s volleyball team swept the host Randolph Southern Rebels on Monday, moving above .500 for the first time this season.
The Patriots (4-3) defeated the Rebels 25-16, 25-17, 25-18.
Kaelyn Weaver and Olivia Kunkler led Jay County’s offense as they had 12 and 11 kills respectively. Hallie Fields was third on the team with five kills, and Randi Ferguson chipped in four kills.
Kunkler also had a team-high four aces to go with her three digs. Natalie Miles and Kailee Denney had a pair of aces each, while Denney totaled 24 assists.
Jay County’s junior varsity team also won, 25-15, 25-19.
Sara Hemmelgarn paced the Patriots in both aces (18) and blocks (four) while also adding 24 kills.
Fields had a team-best 27 kills, as Macie Weitzel had 10 aces and 11 kills. Emma James recorded 39 assists.
Stars beat Archers
BERNE — The South Adams volleyball squad ran its record to 6-3 on the season Monday with a 25-3, 25-5, 25-11 victory over the South Side Archers.
Madi Wurster’s 13 kills were a team-high for South Adams, which also got nine kills from Addie Wanner and five kills from Shaelynn Bowman. Julia Grabau was tops on the team in assists (29) and aces (seven), as Wurster chipped in five digs to lead the Starfires.
South Adams’ junior varsity team also won, 25-10, 25-13.
Kylee Bixler, Josie Grabau and Laryson Zigler all had two kills. Esther Troyer notched nine aces while Grabau tallied five assists.
