Three local volleyball players were once on different sides of the court.
Now they’re playing for the same squad.
Two Fort Recovery High School graduates and one former Jay Countyspiker all made significant contributions recently for the University of Saint Francis volleyball team as it opened its season.
Kendra Siefring, a 2016 FRHS graduate, made her collegiate debut for the Cougars (0-6) in a 3-2 loss to Montana Western on Aug. 24. She had a team-high 13 kills with five digs a year after transferring from Ohio Dominican. Later the same day, she racked up a team-best 29 digs in a 3-1 defeat to The Evergreen State College.
Siefring then totaled 29 kills over four matches in the Big Sky Volleyball Challenge in Butte, Montana, on Friday and Saturday. She logged a team-high dozen kills to go with her two aces and one dig in a 3-2 loss to Montana Tech on Friday. She and former Tribe teammate Cassidy Rammel (class of 2015) shared the team-lead with nine kills in a 3-0 loss Saturday to Providence (Montana).
Rammel, a junior, had 10 kills in her first two matches of the season, then led the Cougars with 19 kills against Montana Tech and 20 against University of Montana-Western on Saturday.
Ava Kunkler, a 2016 Jay County graduate, totaled 23 kills over the six matches, including a season-high seven kills in the loss to Montana Tech. She added six Saturday in a 3-0 loss to University of Great Falls (Montana) while recording a dig and assisting on a block.
Abby Barcus
Jay County – 2017
Made her collegiate debut for the Wright State University women’s volleyball team in a pair of 3-0 losses on Friday.
Barcus, a freshman, had eight kills against Long Beach State in the opening match of the Long Beach Tournament. She also had one dig and assisted on a pair of blocks. She added seven kills, one assist and a dig as the Raiders (0-3) lost to Iowa.
Barcus then recorded seven kills and three digs as the Raiders fell to the No. 2 Stanford Cardinals on Sunday.

Jay County – 2017
Debuted for the Indiana University-East men’s golf team Aug. 14 in the IU-East Warm-Up at Delaware Country Club.
He shot 95 for 18 holes, finishing 37th overall and helping the Red Wolves’ third team place seventh with 356. IU-Kokomo won with a team total of 299.
The freshman followed with a career-best 79 on Aug. 25 in the IU-East Fall Tee Off at Richmond Elks Country Club. He tied for 23rd overall, leading the Red Wolves’ third team as it was seventh with 344. The Red Wolves’ top team won with a score of 295.
Gabbie Mann
Jay County – 2015
Played in three games recently for the IPFW women’s soccer team.
The sophomore, who is rebounding from a torn hamstring she suffered as a freshman, played 31 minutes as a starter on Aug. 18, a 2-0 loss at Ball State.
She logged 22 minutes Aug. 20 in a 3-0 defeat at home to Detroit Mercy before playing two minutes Sunday in a 2-1 loss to Evansville.
Mann, a forward, has not recorded a shot on goal this season for the Mastodons (0-3).
