WOODBURN — The Chief eighth graders are still perfect.

East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade boys basketball team pushed its record to 4-0 on the season Thursday by beating the host Woodlan Warriors, 39-29.

The seventh graders also won, 41-30.

Ethan Dirksen poured in 18 points to lead the EJMS eighth graders, who moved to 2-0 in Allen County Athletic Conference play. Gavin Muhlenkamp was second on the team with eight points, while Adam Muhlenkamp, Crosby Heniser and Darius Esparza had three points apiece.

Bennett Weitzel and Carter Link scored 14 and 11 points respectively for the East Jay seventh graders. Blake Bogenschutz contributed eight points as Dawson Hundley and Josh Dowlin had three points each.



Chief girls sweep

Madison Dirksen and Renna Schwieterman each scored in double figures Thursday, leading the East Jay girls basketball teams to victories over Woodlan.

The eighth grade team edged the Warriors 25-23, and the seventh graders had a 30-9 win.

Dirksen had a team-best 16 points for the EJMS eighth graders, who also got four points from Rachel Muhlenkamp, two each from Abby Elzey and Heaven Hambrock while Holly Hemmelgarn scored one point.

Schwieterman tallied 14 points for the seventh grade Chiefs. Olivia Waters and Lydia Keihn both scored six points and Eden Abshire followed with four points.



Eagle girls fall



SELMA — West Jay’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams both fell to the Selma Braves on Thursday.

The eighth grade team was at the losing end of a 36-23 score, while the seventh graders lost 42-9.

For the WJMS eighth graders, Isabel Rodgers scored 21 points, and Kaelyn Denney contributed the other two points.

Paige Mumbower had four points for the seventh grade Eagles, who got two points each from Grace Shimp and Abbie Fields, as Alizabeth Stotler chipped in one point.



WJ drops two

DUNKIRK — The seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams at West Jay both lost at home to the Selma Braves on Thursday.

The eighth graders lost 36-18, and the seventh grade squad was at the wrong end of a 52-8 score.

Quinn Faulkner had nine points to lead the WJMS eighth graders. Trenton Alexander contributed four points, Kess McBride and Connor Miller had two points each. Spencer Caldwell added one point.

Caldwell’s six points led the seventh grade Eagles. Landon Lowe also had two points.

Flyers top Indians



MARIA STEIN — The Marion Local Flyers handed the Fort Recovery seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams their first road losses of the season.

The eighth grade squad lost 29-26, and the seventh graders fell 31-14.

Marissa Gaerke led the eighth graders with 13 points, and Faith Grube followed with seven points. Lilie Leuthold scored three points, Whitley Rammel had two points and Olivia Hawk added one point.

Madison Guggenbiller’s six points were tops on the team for the seventh grade Indians. Alexis Wendel chipped in four points, while Audra Bubp and Faith Wendel totaled two points each.
