FORT RECOVERY — Whether it was two key baskets in the first half, a strong rebounding performance, a scoring onslaught after halftime or free throws to help seal it the Indians had someone pull through.

And following his first game on the home sideline at Fort Site Fieldhouse, Michael Bashore kept going back to one word.

Proud.

The Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team weathered a late storm and corrected things from the free-throw line late in the game Friday to beat the St. Marys Memorial Roughriders 55-45 in the season opener for both squads.

“Team effort,” said Bashore, who is in his first year leading the Tribe. “Everybody that stepped on the floor contributed in some way.

“Awful proud of those boys. Anytime you can hold someone to 45 points you have a nice chance of winning.”

Bashore didn’t anticipate junior Blayne Tobe playing a ton of minutes, but he was thrust into action as seniors Cade Wendel and Ryan Braun found themselves in foul trouble.

Tobe scored a basket on an assist from Braun to make it 11-6 FRHS late in the first quarter, and in the second he made a layup on a Derek Jutte assist, which put an end to a seven-point St. Marys run to tie the score at 15.

It was Tobe’s game-tying bucket that set the tone for Fort Recovery to take the lead. After Payton Jutte blocked a shot at the other end, Grant Knapke drained a 3-pointer from the left wing and the Indians (1-0) were never behind again.

Trevor Vaughn, a senior forward, missed both of his shots from the field and the free-throw line in the first half, but scored twice in the third quarter. While he didn’t light up the scoresheet per se, he had a game-high nine rebounds, five of which were in the first 16 minutes.

“The best thing about Trevor is when he makes a mistake you can tell him about it and he learns right away,” Bashore said.

Vaughn had two offensive rebounds, and the one he had in the third quarter was on a Knapke shot that missed the rim. Vaughn grabbed it as it grazed the net and put it back up for a layup to give the Indians a 32-21 lead with 3:08 left in the third.

“He’s a very coachable kid,” Bashore said. “He wants to get better every time. I love that about him. He takes criticism well.”

Knakpe, a sophomore, who made his first career start along with freshman Derek Jutte and Vaughn, only attempted two shots before intermission. After the break, however, he scored 13 of his game- and career-high 16 points, including a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter on a Payton Jutte assist that made it 46-36 after St. Marys cut the deficit to seven.

“The way Grant Knapke shot the ball, huge for his confidence going forward,” Bashore said.

The junior guard was 5-of-9 from the field, including 2-for-5 from long range, and made all four of his free throws.

Braun, who had eight points in the first quarter, and Payton Jutte joined him in double figures.

But Wendel, who sat most of the second period in foul trouble, made his contributions in the fourth quarter. On the defensive end he made things miserable for Roughriders’ point guard Braeden Dunlap by blanketing him and not giving him much space with which to work.

Midway through the fourth period, Austin Wilker attempted to drive the baseline left to right for a reverse layup, and Wendel swatted his shot and subsequently got fouled.

Wendel split a pair of bonus charity tosses. He was 6-of-8 from the line and finished with eight points, all of which came in the second half.

“I can’t say enough,” Bashore said. “Everybody that came in, they did something. When things got a little rough there towards the end, Cade’s leadership was unbelievable. He stepped up when we weren’t making free throws.”

Junior varsity

St. Marys jumped out to an early lead and rode it the rest of the way in a 54-44 win over Fort Recovery.

The Roughriders (1-0) scored 19 points in the first quarter to lead by 12 after seven minutes of play. At half the advantage shrunk by one.

Fort Recovery (0-1) had difficulty clawing back during the third period as it trailed 48-34, and had a 10-6 advantage in the final quarter but wasn’t able to overcome the early hole.

Ryne Post led all players with 19 points, Gavin Thobe was second on the team with seven points, and Riley Dilworth contributed five points. Cobe Wendel, Brian Bihn and Ian Homan added three points each.
