MONROE — Three days after snapping a losing streak, the Patriots won again.
Jay County High School’s girls basketball team rode a strong first quarter into a 64-44 victory Friday over the host Adams Central Flying Jets.
It is the first time this season the Patriots (5-5, 2-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) have won back-to-back games.
Jay County, which hosts Fort Recovery at 6 p.m. tonight, jumped out to a 20-4 lead after the opening quarter and pushed the advantage to 36-17 at halftime. In terms of scoring, the Jets (2-8, 0-4 ACAC), who have lost six straight games, matched the Patriots with 13 points in the third quarter. Still, the visitors were out front, 49-30, heading into the final period.
Senior Hanna Ault paced Jay County with 18 points, and junior Shelby Caldwell was second on the team with 15 points. She also led the team with five rebounds.
Jay County’s junior varsity team moved to 8-2 on the year with a 43-20 win. Grace Saxman scored a dozen points, and Aubrie Schwieterman had 10 points.
Tribe holds off ’Cats
DELPHOS, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys basketball team outscored the Wildcats 14-3 in the extra period Friday to defeat the host Jefferson Wildcats 56-45 in overtime.
The Indians (3-0) had a slight edge at half, 25-24, but fell behind 34-32 after three quarters. They forced overtime by outscoring the Wildcats 10-8 in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Grant Knapke led the Indians with a career-high 24 points. He was 3-for-4 from behind the 3-point line and made nine of his 10 free throws. He also led the team with six rebounds. Payton Jutte sank a trio of triples on his way to 19 points, and Noah Lennartz notched a career-best seven points. Ryan Braun, Cade Wendel and Trevor Vaughn had two points each.
It took double overtime for the FRHS junior varsity team to squeeze out a 65-57 win. Regan Martin led the Indians with 21 points, Ryne Post followed with 16 and Brian Bihn contributed 14 points.
