OSSIAN — The Patriot boys got an early idea of how they stack up against conference foes.
Jay County High School’s boys swim team beat one Allen County Athletic Conference opponent Saturday as it finished fifth in the Norwell Invitational.
Oak Hill won with 325 points, and Bluffton was second with 231 points. Norwell scored 208 to finish third and Adams Central totaled 178 points for fourth. Jay County (135) finished ahead of ACAC foe South Adams (87).
Garrett Campbell and Tayler Smeltzer had the best individual finishes for the Patriots. Campbell was second in the 100-yard freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle. Smeltzer finished third in the 100 butterfly.
Chase McFarland was sixth in the 500 freestyle, while Skyler Myers was eighth in both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Zach Colpaert of South Adams picked up two victories, finishing first in the 50 freestyle (22.86 seconds) and 100 freestyle (51.86).
Kam Yoder also had a top-eight finish, placing sixth in the 200 individual medley.

Martin continued her record-breaking effort to begin the season as the Fort Recovery girls swim team won all 11 events in a double dual with Marion Local and St. Marys Memorial at Auglaize Mercer YMCA.
The Indians beat St. Marys 70-23, and defeated Marion Local 74-20. The FRHS boys fell to Marion Local 62-6, and 71-4 to St. Marys.
Martin, who has already broken records in the 50- and 500-yard freestyle races, set a new school mark in the 100 backstroke with her time of 1 minute, 4.36 seconds, beating Carley Stone’s mark by three-hundredths of a second. Martin was also first in the 50 freestyle.
Alexis Bubp (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly), Sophie Timmerman (100 free, 100 breaststroke) and Ava Bubp (200 individual medley, 500 freestyle) also had two victories.
Stars lose to Raiders
BERNE — The South Adams boys basketball team fell behind in the second quarter and wasn’t able to recover in a 51-42 loss Saturday to the Wapahani Raiders.
The Starfires (2-2) led 10-8 after eight minutes but trailed 20-15 at halftime. Both teams scored 17 points in the third quarter as the Raiders (5-0) led 37-32 heading into the fourth quarter.
Freshman James Arnold led the Starfires with 13 points, and Lars In’t Groen joined him in double figures with 10 points. In’t Groen had a game-high nine rebounds.
Kody Fike contributed seven points, and Brandon Newsome added four points.
Hill wins vault
INDIANAPOLIS — Halle Hill earned first place on vault Saturday during the Hoosier Cup Gymnastics Invitational at Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Competing for Anderson Gymnastics and Cheer, Hill, a Jay County High School sophomore, scored 8.85 to win vault as a Level 9 senior gymnast. She was third on balance beam with 8.7, fourth on floor exercise with 8.35 and totaled 6.95 on uneven bars to place fifth.
Her all-around total of 32.85 was third.
Courtney Miles, a Jay County senior who competed in the same division as Hill, had her best finish on bars. She earned 8.2 to place second. She was third on floor (8.375) and fifth on beam (7.35). Miles did not vault so her all-around total of 23.925 was sixth.
Three win hoop shoot
DUNKIRK — Three Redkey Elementary students won their respective age groups in the Dunkirk Elks Hoop Shoot on Sunday at West Jay Community Center.
Lydia Johnson won the 8-and-9-year-old girls division, and Wyatt Foster finished first in the boys division in the same age group. Paisley Fugiett was the girls’ 10-and-11-year-old winner.
Kiley Williams of Redkey was runner-up in the 12-and-13-year-old girls division, and Kaleb Meadows of West Jay Middle School was the male runner-up in the same age group.
