The Patriots held the Bruins to four points through three quarters.

They torched the basket at the other end of the court, too.

Jay County High School’s girls basketball team scored 20 or more points in each of the first three quarters on Tuesday while holding the Blackford Bruins without a field goal in the opening half of a 71-11 shellacking.

It was the 12th straight loss to start the season for the Bruins and their second-lowest point total of the year. The Bruins (0-12) were held to just nine points Nov. 11 at South Adams.

Jay County (6-6) was ahead 20-1 after the first quarter and 42-2 heading into intermission. The third quarter was just as strong offensively for the Patriots as they scored another 22 points. They led 64-4 heading into the fourth quarter.

Shelby Caldwell had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Jay County, which also got 15 points from Hanna Ault and a career-best 14 points from Gwen Omstead.

The Patriots’ junior varsity team also won, 47-22. Aubrie Schwieterman, Grace Saxman and Claire Dirksen all scored 10 points as JCHS moved to 10-2 on the year.



Swimmers split

MUNCIE — The Jay County boys and girls swim teams split a meet with the host Delta Eagles on Tuesday.

The JCHS girls moved to 6-0 on the year with a 108-77 win, while the boys were upended 126-54 and dipped to 1-4.

Sisters Alex and Eliza Bader, and Ashlyn Dow, won two races for the JCHS girls.

Alex Bader had the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle with her time of 2 minutes, 8.85 seconds, and was first in the 500 freestyle in 5:39.24. Eliza Bader had a time of 26.39 seconds to win the 50 freestyle, and won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.11. Dow handled the 100 butterfly (1:09.31) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.62).

The 200 medley relay team of Elizabeth McDowell, Vivienne Kunkler, Rieley Brewster and Alex Bader won in 2:00.78, while Bader, Dow, Kunkler and Brewster teamed for a win in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:12.05.

Jenna Dunfee, Erica Hathaway, Eliza Bader and McDowell had a time of 1:53.24 to win the 200 freestyle relay.

Orlando Castro totaled 133.1 points to win diving, the only victory for the JCHS boys.



Jay tops Parkway

ROCKFORD, Ohio — Jay County’s wrestling team moved to 8-0 on the season with a 52-21 win over the Parkway Panthers.

Kaimen Sanders , Jordan Schricker, Chandler Chapman and Mitchell Frasher each recorded pins. Sanders pinned Cody Murphy in their 138-pound match at the buzzer to end the first period. At 145 pounds, Schricker deposited of Reed Eszcorn 39 seconds into the second period, and Chapman beat Kaine Younker in 3:02 at 170 pounds. Mitchell Frasher (182) beat Bailey Parris at the end of the opening period.

Zakk Atkins defeated Abe Meyer by a 9-3 decision in their 132-pound bout, and Derek Potter had an 8-2 decision over Chaz Neuenschwander at 160 pounds.

Thomas Hemmelgarn, a 152-pounder, scored a 16-5 major decision over Reese Fokine. Taylor Klarer (120), Gaven Hare (220) and Connor Davis (285) all received forfeits.
