BERNE — South Adams will finish what it started.

At its meeting Tuesday, South Adams School Board approved moving forward on the 2018 portion of its high school renovation project.

Board members were also updated on the 2017 portion of the project and plans for dealing with inclement weather this winter.

Jim Christie of Performance Services, the design-build firm hired to lead the project, presented a “phase one report” — a proposed breakdown of the scope of the $1.5 million project, which is to include renovating the remaining classrooms on the southwest side of the media center. That is the biggest chunk of the project at $901,243.

Other priorities for the 2018 renovation include renovation of the former office area into intense intervention classes at $441,884 and making changes to the media center at $118,829.

Christie also presented several alternatives, including new carpet in the media center and hallways, locker replacements and a new media center circulation desk were among the options. The total for all alternative work is $414,181.

Board members Arlene Amstutz, John Mann, Julie Mansfield, John Buckingham, Amy Orr and Mitch Sprunger, absent Landon Patterson, approved the phase one report, giving Performance Services the go-ahead to move on to phase two, which will include a detailed project design proposal.

Funding for the project will come from cash on hand, rather than bonding, including $647,051 from the rainy day fund, $445,148 from the sale of the former elementary school property, $259,801 that is no longer needed for the energy savings program and about $125,000 in already-encumbered capital projects money.

Board members also heard an update on the 2017 renovation. The chemistry and biology room floor will be partially replaced over winter break and the additional walls being installed to enclose the media center are also planned to be complete by Jan. 1. Other renovations that still need to be done this year — the bulk of the project was completed during the summer — include a piece of laminate and tinted windows in the high school office and additional cabinets in the science room.

Litwiller also broke down the balance left from the 2017 project. After all projects are paid for, there will be a remaining $89,493.71 that the board approved to be spent on equipment, such as new chairs and desks.

The board also approved a plan for winter weather announcements and virtual learning days for snowy and/or icy weather.

South Adams will use both two- and three-hour delays, although three-hour delays will only be called when the schools are certain that school will be held that day. For three-hour delays, the school day will be extended by an hour.

The initial decision on school delays or cancelations will be made no later than 6:30 a.m. The final call in a two-hour delay situation will be made by 8:10 a.m.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents’ Day are scheduled as make-up days and if those are used or no longer available, virtual learning days will be used.

In other business, the board:

•Approved the two-year contract extension for superintendent Scott Litwiller.

•OK’d the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school calendars. Next year’s calendar calls for the first day of school to be Aug. 14 with fall break Oct. 24 through 26, winter break Dec. 24 through Jan. 2, spring break March 25 through 29 and the final day May 23.

•Approved the Teacher Appreciation Grant of $36,477.58. Teachers who were rated effective or highly effective will receive a one-time stipend of $340, and highly effective-rated teachers will receive an additional 25 percent. The board also approved a stipend from other funds to go to a selected group of faculty members who are not classroom teachers but are licensed teachers in student services positions.

•Accepted the resignation of Becky Coffee as middle school special ed aide effective Dec. 31. Lori Fonte, who has served as a substitute teacher, will take over the position.

•Approved the following: A request from Kim LeFever to take students to Kings Island for an engineering day May 4; A resolution of Tim and Michele LeFever’s interest in selling two acres to the school; the Property/Liability Insurance and Workers’ Compensation and Contract for $119,536 from Bixler Insurance, which will go into effect Jan. 5; $3,700 for a school production of “Bye Bye Birdie”; set its next meeting for 6:15 p.m. Jan. 16.
