RICHMOND — The youthful Patriots are continuing to show improvement.
Jay County High School’s gymnastics team posted a season-high team score in finishing second Monday in a meet with the Muncie Central Bearcats and host Richmond Red Devils.
Richmond won with a score of 98.3 points, ahead of Jay County’s 95. Muncie Central was third with 89.725.
Sophomore Karlie Bullard finished first on the floor exercise with a career-best 9.0. She added a fourth-place finish on balance beam (8.325) and uneven bars (8.25). She also scored 8.3 on vault for an all-around total of 33.875, which was third.
Rachel Louck had the Patriots’ only other top-five finish, placing fifth on floor by earning a career-best 8.65. She scored 8.175 on vault, 7.525 on bars and 6.4 on beam to score 30.375 in the all-around.
Riley Leavell earned her highest score (7.925) on beam. She had a 7.65 on floor, 7.6 on vault and 7.2 on bars for an all-around total of 30.375.
Mariah Salinas also competed, and she scored 4.375 on beam and 3.85 on vault.
Swimmers split
MUNCIE — The Jay County middle school swim teams split a meet with the host Delta Eagles on Monday.
The girls won 119-66, while the boys lost 98-78.
Ashlyn Dow and Eliza Bader both won two individual events for the girls team. Dow placed first in the 100-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke, while Bader won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
Rieley Brewster was first in the 50 butterfly, and Lillian Clemmons won the 400 freestyle.
Elayna Paro, Brewster, Bader and Clemmons teamed for a win in the 200 medley relay. Mara Bader, Paro, Clemmons and Dow combined to win the 200 freestyle relay, and Brewster, Dow and the Bader sisters teamed to win the 400 freestyle relay.
Konner Sommers was the lone dual winner for the boys, taking the top spot in the 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle. Samuel Crump also won the 50 freestyle.
Ben Nichols, Nico Minnich, Sommers and Crump teamed for a victory in the 200 freestyle relay, while Damian Hicks, Josh Monroe, Minnich and Crump won the 400 freestyle relay.
Chiefs win twice
PONETO — The East Jay Middle School wrestling team picked up a pair of wins Monday in a three-team meet with the Heritage Patriots and host Southern Wells Raiders.
The Chiefs defeated the Raiders 51-15 and the Patriots 67-12.
Kadin Ridenour (140 pounds) and Blayne Daniels (102) both had a pair of pins. Dawson Hundley won by pin and decision at 90 pounds.
Also earning victories were Grayson Williams (80), Dyllan Garringer (85), Lita Chowning (110), Ian Ruiz (125), Mason Ludy (132), RJ Lennartz (150) and Dakota Lairson (160).
EJ 6th falls
East Jay’s sixth grade boys basketball teams both lost to the Muncie Northside Titans on Monday.
The A squad came up short, 35-33, while the B team was at the losing end of a 39-2 score.
Bennet Weitzel led the Chiefs’ A team with 11 points. Carter Link followed with eight points, with Blake Bogenschutz and Josh Dowlen adding five points apiece. Matthew Fields chipped in four points and Simon Dirksen tallied two points.
In the B contest, Koby Lewellen scored the only two points for the Chiefs.
