Katy Smeltzer was part of the first Allen County Athletic Conference championship at Jay County.

She helped her new Patriot team win its third consecutive title over the weekend.

Smeltzer, a 2015 Jay County High School graduate, helped the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team win its third straight Mid-South Conference championships Friday through Sunday in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Smeltzer swam the third leg of the 800-yard freestyle relay that earned the MSC title. She swam the third leg in 2 minutes, 1.41 seconds, joining Grace Moffat, Christina Klouda and Brittany Litke to finish in 7:56.52.

She also helped the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays finish second, and was part of the third-place 200 medley relay team.

Individually, she was second in the 100 butterfly (1:00.05), fourth in the 100 freestyle (54.6 seconds) and fifth in 50 freestyle (25 seconds).



Anne Vormohr

Jay County – 2016

Earned one victory and helped a second-place relay as the Ball State University women’s swim team lost to Notre Dame on Saturday, 129-108.

Vormohr won the 100-yard backstroke in 58.77 seconds, finishing ahead of Notre Dame’s Claire Deselm by 0.37 seconds.

She also swam the backstroke leg of the runner-up 200 medley relay, joining Amanda Kedzierski, Andrea Richter and Jessica Extine for a time of 1 minute, 45.29 seconds. Her split was 27.25 seconds.

Vormohr was also fourth in the 50 freestyle in 24.17 seconds.



Sophie Bader

Jay County – 2016

Was part of a winning relay for the Ball State women’s swim team in its loss to Notre Dame.

Bader swam the first leg of the 200 freestyle relay team that finished first in 1 minute, 36.97 seconds. She joined Peighton Gilbert, Andrea Richter and Jessica Extine in winning by more than five seconds.

She was also fifth in the 100 butterfly (57.96) and sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:11.07).



Wade Gelhaus

Fort Recovery – 2013

Was strong on the glass for the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team Feb. 2 in an 89-72 loss to NCAA Division II No. 20 Ferris State.

Gelhaus yanked down 12 rebounds for the Cardinals, who are now 14-9. He also had four points and a pair of assists.

The senior finished with eight points, seven boards and one assist Saturday as SVSU topped Grand Valley State 64-42.



Abby Wendel

Jay County – 2016

Came off the bench to finish fourth in scoring for the University of Rio Grande in its 106-96 loss Tuesday to IU-East.

She was 5-for-8 from the field, made one of her two 3-point attempts and her only free throw to finish with 12 points in less than 14 minutes of play. She also had two assists.

Wendel added six points, three rebounds and one assist as the Red Storm (17-10, 8-6 River States Conference) defeated West Virginia Tech 82-74 on Saturday.



Elijah Kahlig

Fort Recovery – 2014

Reached double figures in scoring for the University of Findlay men’s basketball team Feb. 2 in its 88-74 victory over Hillsdale.


The junior was 4-of-6 from the field, including 3-for-4 from long range, and also made both of his free throw attempts to finish fourth on the team with 13 points. He also had one rebound, one assist and a steal for the Oilers (17-5, 11-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).



Kegan Comer

Jay County – 2013

Scored in double figures to help the University of St. Francis men’s basketball team pick up its third consecutive win Tuesday.

Comer tallied 13 points while also sharing the team lead in assists for the NAIA Division II No. 19 Cougars (19-8) in an 87-72 victory over Huntington. He added five assists, five rebounds and two steals.

He also had 10 points, three rebounds and two assists in an 80-72 win Saturday over Goshen.



Scott Schwieterman

Jay County – 2013

Helped the NAIA Division II No. 22 Indiana Tech men’s basketball team to an 80-72 victory Wednesday over Lawrence Tech.

Schwieterman was one of three Knights to finish in double figures as he scored 12 points. He also had seven rebounds and a steal as Indiana Tech improved to 20-7.

The junior totaled 13 points, four rebounds and a steal Saturday in an 81-76 win over Concordia.



Sawyer Miller

S. Adams – 2015

Helped the Indiana Tech wrestling team to a 44-4 victory Friday against Manchester University.

Miller defeated Alan Mock by tech fall, 20-5, in 6 minutes, 56 seconds.

The two-time IHSAA state medalist moved to 15-2.



Catherine Dunn

Jay County – 2015

Posted a team-high scoring effort for the Brescia University women’s basketball team Saturday in its 75-50 loss to IU Kokomo.

Dunn was 6-for-10 from the field, including 2-for-3 from behind the 3-point line, and made four of her five free throws to lead the Bearcats with 18 points. She also had three rebounds.

She followed with a 15-point effort and a team-high six rebounds as the Bearcats (4-24, 2-13 River States Conference) lost to Asbury on Tuesday, 97-78.



Abigail Johnson

Jay County – 2014

Won her only race for the host Indiana Wesleyan women’s track team Saturday in the IWU Midwest Classic.

Johnson won the 1,000-meter run in 3 minutes, 22.54 seconds. She beat Grace’s Karla Singer by more than six seconds.



Drew LeFever

S. Adams – 2016

Placed seventh in the shot put for the Taylor University men’s track and field team Saturday at the IWU Midwest Classic.

LeFever had a distance of 44 feet, 5 inches, on his fourth throw to place seventh. Bethe’s Erik Escobedo won with a distance of 49 feet, 6 inches.
