Jay's streak ends

MONROEVILLE — Jay County had a difficult time making shots during the first half.

It appeared as if the ship was righted when it scored the first five points of the second half to tie the host Patriots at 20.

But then the shots didn’t go in anymore. And Heritage was nearly flawless from the free-throw line.

The Jay County High School boys basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped Friday night in a 49-32 loss to the host Heritage Patriots.

“We could not hit a shot, turned the ball over, we fouled and they hit free throws,” said JCHS coach Chris Krieg, whose team hosts former Allen County Athletic Conference foe Leo Lions at 6 p.m.

Heritage, meanwhile, won its fourth consecutive game to improve to 9-7 (5-1 ACAC) and clinched a share of the ACAC regular season title with Woodlan.

“From that point on they just out-executed us,” Krieg said. “When they get a lead they spread you out.

“They are a very good team, especially when they’ve got the lead.”

After trailing 20-15 at half, Jay Houck made a basket and a free throw and Cole Stigleman scored his only two points to knot the score at 20 apiece. Heritage tallied the final six points of the quarter on a 3-pointer from Walter Knapke, two foul shots from Abram Beard and one free throw from Rylie Schane.

Schane had a game-high 13 points for Heritage, with Beard adding a dozen and Lamar Hudson chipping in 11 points.

Heritage was 14-for-16 from the free-throw line — Malcolm Smith, Shane and Beard were each 4-of-4 from the stripe — in the fourth quarter to put the visiting Patriots (12-6) out of reach.

Houck picked up his second foul just past the midway point of the first quarter so he was relegated to the bench for a majority of the first half.

With the Patriots’ leading scorer out of the equation, it was up to Schlosser to take matters into his own hands.

The JCHS senior scored the first eight points of the game for the visiting Patriots, driving the left baseline, taking the lane to the hoop for a basket and a foul shot and draining a 3-pointer from the wing.

He led Jay County with 11 points, all of which came in the first half.

“Thank God he did because he kept us in the game early,” Krieg said.

Houck scored seven of his 10 points in the fourth quarter, including making five consecutive free throws.

“It’s frustrating,” Krieg said of looking down the bench and seeing Houck sitting in a seat rather than on the court. “I feel sorry for Jay because he is getting pounded inside and he’s not getting any calls. Then at the other end he gets touch fouls. Those things are hard.

But as Heritage started to pull away, Jay County started to get desperate on offense and started shooting from long range. It was 3-for-11 from beyond the 3-point line.

“When you’re behind there late you have to try to get some points,” Krieg said. “Obviously we shot more threes than I cared to.”

Junior varsity

Jay County outscored Heritage 10-0 in the fourth quarter and forced a turnover as time expired in a 34-31 victory.

The visiting Patriots (11-5, 5-1 ACAC) trailed 10-9 after the first quarter and 17-16 at halftime. Heritage held a 14-8 margin in the third quarter to go on top 31-24 heading into the final period, but weren’t able to score in the last seven minutes.

Matthew Franks scored nine of his team-high 11 points during the first half, and Korbin Auker was second on the team with eight points. Auker, a sophomore, did all of his scoring in the fourth quarter.

Jordan Stultz followed with seven points, Gavin Randall chipped in five points and Parker Grimes added three points.

Freshman

Jay County used a 19-point fourth quarter to pull away from Heritage in its 48-31 victory.

Heritage outscored Jay County 14-7 to head into the locker room with the score tied at 19. Jay County took a 29-23 lead into the fourth quarter before exploding for 19 points while holding the host Patriots to eight points in the final frame.

Gavin Lambert and Gabe Link poured in 17 and 13 points respectively for Jay County. which also got nine points from Brayden Sprunger, five points from Brian Williams and four points from Sheldon Upp.
