A Jay County High School student is raising money to start a music program for residents at Persimmon Ridge Rehabilitation Centre.
Audrey Shreve, a senior from rural Redkey, is a co-officer for the JCHS chapter of National Honor Society. She decided to work with Music and Memory, a nonprofit organization that provides music programming to people with dementia, on her quarterly service project. She will be raising money throughout the week to certify Persimmon Ridge in the program, and will have a fundraiser Feb. 17 at the Patriot boys’ basketball game.
“My grandfather right now has dementia so I knew I definitely wanted to do something with that because he’s really important to me, so I was looking for different organizations that would help for Alzheimer’s or dementia patients,” Shreve said. “The Music and Memory program is just especially neat because it provides specific programs for dementia residents, and it just really encompasses all the helpful aspects of music.”
The fundraiser will be a carnival in JCHS commons, with corn hole, face painting and games. Shreve needs to raise $1,250 for the certification from Music and Memory, but she will also be collecting working iPods and iPhones to use in the program.
Shreve has been a member of NHS since her sophomore year, and is one of four officers, each of whom is leading a service project. She’s volunteered twice this semester at Swiss Village Retirement Community in Berne because it already has the Music and Memory program in place.
“That’s something I’ve really wanted to do with my life, make sure I’m making a difference in other people’s lives,” Shreve said. “I wanted to keep my program within Jay County, within the community, to see that I personally can make a difference in my community.”
If she doesn’t make her goal this week, Shreve said she will continue raising money.
She will be walking around at lunch this week asking for donations from her classmates, and has been brainstorming different ways to raise money at her school.
