The Starfires put themselves in contention for at least two sectional titles.

The host Patriots swam fast as well, but the field was just a little too quick.

South Adams High School’s boys swim team earned two top seeds and is knocking on the door for a few more following the IHSAA swimming sectional prelims Thursday at Jay County.

“I’m really pleased with the kids tonight,” said SAHS coach Andy Lehman.

Diving preliminaries begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, with the swimming and diving finals to resume at 1 p.m. The top eight seeds swim in the championship finals, with seeds nine through 16 in the consolation finals.

Jay County was without a top seed, but both the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays are seeded second behind Delta, which led all teams with six No. 1 seeds.

“Probably the best part of the night was our sprint freestyles in the freestyle relays,” said JCHS coach Matt Slavik. “All four boys (Ian Reynolds, Garrett Campbell, Tayler Smeltzer and Christopher McDowell) put up good numbers in their sprints tonight.

“Pretty happy with where they’re at and they’ll be ready to explode on Saturday.”

The Starfires’ 200 medley relay team of Zach Teeple, Paul Neuenschwander, Kam Yoder and Zach Colpaert gave South Adams its first No. 1 seed in the first event of the night.

Projected fourth based on the psych sheet times, the SAHS quartet beat Bluffton by more than a second to win the first heat, and its time of 1 minute, 46.45 seconds, held up as the No. 1 seed.

“Coming into this, obviously looking at the psych sheet we knew our medley relay could do better than what we were seeded,” Lehman said. “Obviously we’re really excited for that No. 1 seed.”

Teeple earned the other top seed for the Starfires by setting a school record in the 100 backstroke. The junior, who had only broken a minute twice this season, finished in 56.67 seconds, a mere 0.12 seconds ahead of Muncie Central’s Alec Hale, who is seeded first in the 200 freestyle.

“We’re pretty excited about that,” Lehman said of Teeple, who broke Justin Klopp’s record of 57.49 seconds set in 2007. “He’s been gunning for that goal for two years now.”

South Adams junior Zack Colpaert is seeded second in the 100 freestyle (50.28) and third in the 50 freestyle (22.43), behind top-seeded Andrew Torres of Delta. Torres broke sectional and pool records in both with times of 47.22 and 21.29 seconds respectively.

Teeple is also seeded second in the 200 individual medley, and is part of the third-seeded 200 freestyle relay team with Trey Lehman, Yoder and Colpaert which finished in 1:36.5. Delta is the top seed at 1:30.87.

Jay County’s Campbell earned career-best times to finish third and sixth respectively in the 100 freestyle (51.01) and 50 freestyle (23:45) races.

“He’s on fire,” Slavik said. “He carries this momentum into Saturday, he’s going to be scoring some good points for us.”

JCHS junior Christopher McDowell is fourth and sixth respectively in the 500 freestyle (5:25.74) and 200 freestyle (1:56.59), and Slavik is hoping the notion he’ll be competing in the championship heat will help push him to swim faster.

Smeltzer will also be swimming in the championship heat of the 100 butterfly, as he is seeded eighth in 1:00.24. South Adams will have Neuenschwander in the 100 breaststroke final seeded seventh in 1:10.86.

In the consolation finals for Jay County is Alex LeMaster (100 breaststroke – 11th), Smeltzer (200 IM – 10th) and Reynolds (100 backstroke – 16th). The 200 medley relay team of Chase McFarland, Ben Strausburg, Skyler Myers and LeMaster is seeded 10th.

Swimming in the consolation finals for South Adams are Brayden Collingsworth (500 freestyle – 12th, 200 freestyle – 13th), Ethan Duff (100 butterfly – 12th), Lehman (100 backstroke – 13th), Yoder (100 butterfly – 14th) and Neuenschwander (100 freestyle – 15th) and the 400 freestyle relay (ninth) team of Duff, Collingsworth, Neuenschwander and Lehman.

Jason Minnich, a former Jay County Patriot now swimming for the Burris Owls, is seeded third and sixth respectively in the 200 and 100 freestyle events. He also helped the Owls to a fourth seed in the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay squad earn a six seed.
