FFA events set

Both the Jay County and Fort Recovery FFA chapters have a variety of activities scheduled for National FFA Week this week.

JCHS will host dress-up days throughout the week, including twin Tuesday, blue and gold Wednesday, camouflage Thursday and flannel Friday. It will also host a staff breakfast at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Jay County will have lunch activities for students each day, will visit with East Jay and West Jay middle school eighth graders during lunch periods Thursday and will take part in a farm safety day for fifth graders on Friday. There will also be a tractor drive-in Friday.

Fort Recovery’s activities open with a tractor drive-in to Fort Recovery High School on Tuesday morning. A greenhand initiation is slated for 7:50 to 8:15 a.m.

On Wednesday, there will be a community breakfast from 6 to 8 p.m. in the high school commons. A petting zoo will follow from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday in the ag shop at FRHS. The week will close with Ag Olympics at Fort Site Fieldhouse from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. Friday.



Democrats organizing

The Jay County Democratic Party will meet at 10 a.m. March 4 at Democratic Party Headquarters, 221 S. Meridian St., Portland, to elect a chairman, vice chairman, secretary and treasurer.

Those seeking an office must be a Democratic Party voter, reside in the county and indicate in writing their intent to seek a specific office to chairman Bob Clamme, 1423 E. Indiana 26, Portland, or vice chairman Pam Buch, 16 Leisure Lane, Dunkirk, no later than Feb. 28.

The public is invited to attend.



Deer struck

A Union City man’s car sustained minimal damage after he struck a deer Sunday night.

Joseph T. Siegrist, 64, 8504 E. 800 South, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was traveling east on county road 800 South near the intersection with county road 800 east when he saw a deer in the roadway. He was unable to avoid hitting the deer with his vehicle, a 2012 Honda Odyssey.

Damage in the 8:05 p.m. accident is estimated to be less than $1,000.
