Backing accident

A rural Portland man and a Celina, Ohio, man were involved in a vehicle accident Tuesday morning east of Portland.

Kenneth J. Hemmelgarn, 52, 648 S. 300 East, Portland, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was backing his 2003 Ford F350 out of a driveway at 799 S. 300 East and didn’t see a northbound semi on county road 300 East.

David W. Schaffer, 49, 1338 Ohio 29, Celina, told police he was unable to avoid striking Hemmelgarn’s F350 with the 2006 Freightliner Columbia 112 he was driving.

The Freightliner is registered to Mercer Landmark Inc., same address as driver.

Damage in the 6:23 a.m. accident was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.



Pole struck

A Salamonia woman struck a pole with a car Tuesday afternoon in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Ashley L. Bonifas, 28, 5977 E. North St., told Portland Police Department she was driving west in the Wal-Mart parking lot, at 950 W. Votaw St., Portland. She was turning down a row of parking spaces and failed to see a pole, striking it with the front driver side of the 1998 Dodge Ram she was driving.

The Ram is registered to Travis K. Storie, 728 E. Main St., Portland. Damage in the 2:58 p.m. accident was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.



Hit and run

A Geneva man’s pickup truck was damaged in a hit and run accident Sunday afternoon in Portland.

Gary L. Hendershot, 200 High St., told Portland Police Department that his 2011 Chevrolet Silverado was parked in the parking lot of Pizza Hut, 1502 N. Meridian St., and the rear end was damaged by a vehicle that left the scene. 

Damage in the accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
