FORT WAYNE — The Patriots struggled to score in the opening quarter.
They had a difficult time stopping the Cadets in the second.
The Jay County High School girls basketball team managed just three points in the first eight minutes and was outscored 19-5 in the second during a 54-34 loss on Tuesday to the Class 3A No. 6 Concordia Cadets.
Jay County (8-7), which travels to Bluffton on Friday to take on the Tigers, trailed 29-8 at halftime before its offense found a bit of a groove in the second half. The Patriots scored 11 points in the third quarter and 15 in the fourth, but weren’t able to slow down the Cadets.
Britlyn Dues led the Patriots with 11 points, and Taylor Homan followed with 10 points and a team-high four rebounds.
Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost, 30-19. Hannah Phillips tallied five points, while Sam Twigg and Hanna Dillon had three points apiece. The Patriots fell to 15-2 on the year.
Will leads Indians
ST. MARYS, Ohio — Whitney Will scored a game-high 19 points and had two teammates also reach double figures Tuesday as the Fort Recovery girls basketball team defeated the St. Marys Roughriders, 60-44.
Fort Recovery (6-0) led 22-12 after the opening quarter and pushed the advantage to 35-21 at intermission. The Roughriders had a 12-10 advantage in the third quarter, but a strong effort in the fourth helped the Indians preserve the double-digit lead and remain unbeaten on the year.
Jocelyn Kaiser was 8-for-16 from the field to finish with 16 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for the Indians. Carley Stone joined them in double figures with 10 points to go with her three assists.
Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also won, 25-17, in one half of play.
Chloe Showalter and Brooke Kahlig each tallied eight points to lead the Tribe. Val Muhlenkamp chipped in five points and Olivia Patch scored four.

DECATUR — After leading a one-point margin entering the second quarter, Bellmont slowly pulled away from the South Adams girls basketball team in handing the Starfires a 50-41 loss on Tuesday.
Bellmont led 14-13 after one quarter before extending the advantage to 30-23 at halftime. South Adams (8-7) managed just five points in the third quarter and trailed 39-28 heading into the final period.

JC wrestlers 8th
CONNERSVILLE — Mason Winner won the second tournament of his young high school career last week as the Jay County wrestling team finished eighth out of 32 teams in the Spartan Classic Thursday and Friday hosted by Connersville.
Carmel scored 244 points for first, followed by Roncalli (22.8.5) in second and Lebanon (211) in third. Jay County scored 137.5 points.
Winner earned two first-period pins in the 145-pound bracket, defeating Christian Bates of Hagerstown and Jordyn Wills of Eastern Hancock in 1 minute, 12 seconds, and 1:52 respectively. He won his quarterfinal match by default, before a 5-2 decision over Carmel’s Chad Sauder in the semifinal. Winner then pinned Roncalli’s Patrick Waugh in 3:45 for his second tournament title of the season.
At 160 pounds, senior Ivan Hemmelgarn went 4-1 to finish in second place. He pinned his way to the championship match before losing by a 5-1 decision to Richmond’s Alston Bane. Gaven Hare finished third at 220 pounds and Tyler Leonhard was sixth at 152 pounds.

LYNN — Jay County’s junior varsity wrestling team defeated Randolph Southern’s varsity squad on Tuesday, 58-15.
At 120 pounds, Bryan Alexander earned an 8-2 decision, Garrett Mann won 14-13 in his 145-pound match and Mitchel Frasher won by major decision, 18-9, in his 160-pound bout.
Jackson Lyons (138) won by pin in 2 minutes, 32 seconds, and George Lykins pinned his heavyweight opponent in 1:06.
Drew Simmons (113), Shawn Ashley (132), Chandler Chapman (170), Andrew Toney (182) and Hunter Lairson (220) all received forfeits.
Patriots fall to Tigers
YORKTOWN — The Jay County freshman boys basketball team closed its holiday break with a 44-33 loss Monday to Yorktown.
The Patriots (2-4) trailed 9-4 after the opening quarter, but 3-pointers from Brayden Sprunger and Payton Nichols helped JCHS take a 15-14 lead at halftime. The Tigers nabbed the lead with a 14-5 edge during the third quarter, and the Patriots weren’t able to overcome the 28-20 deficit heading into the final period.
Gabe Link scored eight of his team-high 11 points in the second half. Noah Arbuckle and Sprunger finished with six points each, while Brian Williams and Sheldon Upp contributed five points apiece.
South Adams’ junior varsity team also lost, 39-34. Lydia Loshe led the way with 13 points and Emilee Myers chipped in a dozen points.
