FTC may act soon on merger

Business Roundup

The planned merger between Walgreens Boots Alliance and Rite-Aid may get the green light from federal regulators this month.

The New York Post reported this week that the Federal Trade commission is expected to make a decision on the merger before President-elect Donald Trump takes office on Jan. 20.

"It is most likely (FTC) Chairwoman Edith Ramirez addresses it before she leaves," a source close to the situation told the newspaper. The proposed merger was first announced in October 2015.

Once complete, it would create the country's largest pharmacy chain.

Papal snack?

McDonald’s has opened a restaurant just around the corner from St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, The Washington Post reported this week.

The newspaper said that a number of Roman

Catholic leaders and Vatican residents have spoken out against the presence of McDonald’s at that location.

"It's a controversial, perverse decision to say the least," Cardinal Elio Sgreccia was quoted as saying.

"Instead of a Golden Arches near the heart of the Roman Catholic Church, the space should be used to house entities which help the needy, in line with the pope's call for a 'poor church for the poor.’"

McDonald’s is renting the 1,765-square-foot space from the Vatican for about $31,000 a month, and a number of cardinals live in the same building where the restaurant is located.

The new restaurant is company-owned and not franchised, according to a spokeswoman.
