ROCHESTER — Kyndal Huey is a regional champion.
She’ll have a teammate with her at the next level.
Huey, a Jay County High School senior, finished first in her weight class during the inaugural Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Girls North Regional on Friday at Rochester.
Jade Zorn, who is also a senior, finished fourth to qualify for the state finals on Friday at Hamilton Heights in Arcadia.
Huey earned three pins to win her 106-pound championship. She needed 1 minute, 27 seconds, to defeat Haley Hoover of Tippecanoe Valley before beating Markaela Pugh of Hamilton Heights in 3:13. Huey then pinned Willoe Cunnington of Daleville in 1:38 to win the championship.
Zorn pinned River Forests’ Keara Wisek in 3:33 in their 113-pound match. She got pinned by Mallory Engle of Columbia City in 4:40 in the second round before beating Westview’s Krist Mishler in 1:21 to reach the third-place match. Wisek avenged the earlier loss to Zorn by defeating the JCHS senior by a 6-5 decision to place third.
Huey and Zorn were the only wrestlers to represent Jay County, and totaled 10 points to finish tied for seventh.
Huntington North and Woodlan both totaled 17 points to lead the 30 teams that scored points.
