COLDWATER, Ohio — The Jay County High School wrestling team earned its third tournament victory of the season Saturday, finishing 5-0 to win the Coldwater Invitational.

The Patriots, who host the Allen County Athletic Conference individual championships Saturday, defeated Van Wert 58-23, Wayne Trace 54-29, Jefferson 52-29, Celina 68-12 and the host Cavaliers 37-33.

Kaimen Sanders (126 pounds), Mason Winner (145) and Tyler Leonhard (152) each went 5-0 in their respective weight classes. Ivan Hemmelgarn was also undefeated as he bounced between 160 and 170 pounds.

Finishing 4-1 were Seth Fugiett (120), Thomas Hemmelgarn (160, 170), Chandler Chapman (182), Max Schmit (195) and Gaven Hare (220).



FR girls sixth

WAPAKONETA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery girls swim team finished sixth out of 15 teams on Saturday in the Lions Club Invitational at Wapakoneta YMCA.

Celina scored 226 points to win the invitational, with Wapakoneta (191) in second and Lima Shawnee (149) in third. The Indians totaled 134 points.

Fort Recovery’s boys squad placed 12th with 13 points. Other team scores were not provided.

Cassy Martin and Sophie Timmerman each earned individual victories for the Tribe girls. Martin won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.96 seconds while adding a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke.

Timmerman won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.36) and was also third in the 500 freestyle. Alexis Bubp was second in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 200 freestyle, and Faith Hull placed ninth in the 100 butterfly.

Martin, Timmerman, Bubp and Hull combined to finish second in the 200 medley relay and third in the 200 freestyle relay.

Harrison Kaup earned the best finish for the FRHS boys, as he was eighth in the 50 freestyle.



Tribe blasts FM

FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s boys basketball team scored 20 or more points in each of the second and third quarters on Saturday to blast the Franklin Monroe Jets, 73-46, at Fort Site Fieldhouse.

Franklin Monroe had a 12-9 lead after the first quarter before Fort Recovery (9-1) exploded for 28 points during the second quarter for a 37-25 advantage. The Tribe, which is ranked 10th in Division IV, added another 22 points in the third quarter to push the lead to 59-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

FRHS senior Micaiah Cox led all players with 25 points while also grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.

Payton Jutte and Jason Roessner scored 13 and 10 points respectively in support of Cox. Matt Bihn chipped in nine points, and Travis Sutter tallied eight points.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also won, 55-50. Reese Rogers scored 19 points to lead the Indians, who got 15 points from Trevor Vaughn and a dozen from Noah Lennartz.



Two Stars win titles

GARRETT — The South Adams wrestling team had a pair of champions Saturday as it placed eighth in the Garrett Invitational.

Angola won the team title with 192 points, with host Garrett finishing runner up with 178 points. Northridge was third with 166. South Adams totaled 115 points in the 15-team tournament.

Wyatt Miller, a 113-pound junior, and Taylor Cuellar, a 285-pound sophomore, were each 4-0 to win the championship at their respective weight classes. Michael Rupp (106), Briar Goodwin (132) and Isaiah Baumgartner (220) all finished fourth, while Drake Deitsch (138) placed sixth.



Patriot JV goes 3-2

STRAUGHN — Jay County’s junior varsity wrestling team finished 3-2 to place fourth at the Tri Invitational on Saturday.

The Patriots defeated Daleville 40-3, Cambridge City Lincoln 42-36 and Blue River Valley 73-3. They lost to host Tri 45-30 and Perry Merdian 76-0.

Mitchel and Dawson Frasher were both 4-1 for the tournament. Mitchel Frasher had one forfeit and a pin, while Dawson Frasher received three forfeits and notched one pin. Cooper Jacks pinned two opponents and picked up two forfeits while also finishing 4-1.

Mitchell Ferguson, Jackson Lyons and Derek Potter were all 3-2 on the day.



East Jay 1-2 at invite

DECATUR — East Jay Middle School’s wrestling team finished 1-2 on Saturday at the Bellmont Invitational.

The Chiefs opened the invitational with a 54-35 victory over Blackhawk Christian, before losing matches to Cowan (49-29) and the host Braves (63-9).

Ramon Bravo and Blayne Daniels each went 3-0 for East Jay. Ian Ruiz, Dyllan Garringer, Riley Huftel and Dakota Lairson were each 2-1 for the invite.

In exhibition matches, Zach Brotherton and Dawson Hundley were each 2-0.



Chiefs go 1-1

DUNKIRK — West Jay’s seventh grade girls basketball team finished 1-1 on Saturday in the West Jay Invitational.

The Eagles lost the opening-round game to Daleville, 24-23, before a 32-30 victory over Northeastern in the consolation game.

Isabel Rodgers combined to score 35 points, including a 19-point effort against Northeastern. Kaelyn Denney chipped in 13 points, while Rylee Hambrock totaled four points and Madelin Ardizzone had three.
