MUNCIE — The eight-meet losing streak is no more.

Jay County High School’s boys swim team snapped its eight-meet losing streak to start the season by edging Muncie Central 91-89 on Tuesday.

The Patriots girls (7-3) also defeated the Bearcats 99-83.

Christopher McDowell and Garrett Campbell won two individual events apiece while also helping a winning relay. McDowell was first in both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races with times of 2 minutes, 1.05 seconds, and 5:33.99 respectively. Campbell won the 50 freestyle (24.89) and 100 freestyle (54.98).

Tayler Smeltzer won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.73, and Ian Reynolds joined the trio to the 400 freestyle relay by less than a second in 3:45.25.

Elizabeth McDowell and Alex Bader both had two individual wins for the JCHS girls (7-3). McDowell won the 200 freestyle (2:13.8) and 100 butterfly (1:09.59), while Bader won the 200 individual medley (2:17.4) and 100 freestyle (58.36). Emma James earned her first race victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.76).

Jenna Dunfee, Vivienne Kunkler, Bader and McDowell won the 200 medley relay in 2:05.43; Erica Hathaway joined Hanna James, Kaitlyn Dow and Dunfee to win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:28.67; and McDowell, Hathaway, Kunkler and Bader teamed for a victory in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.63.



Martin sets record



MUNCIE — Cassy Martin set a new school record in helping the Fort Recovery girls swim team finish second Tuesday in a four-team meet at Delta.

Scores for the meet, which included Muncie Burris and Liberty Christian, were not available.

Martin set a new school mark by winning the 50-yard freestyle in 25.61 seconds. She beat FRHS junior Carley Stone’s record by 0.27 seconds.

Alexis Bubp earned wins in the 200 individual medley (2:23.84) and 100 freestyle (57.31), and Sophie Timmerman picked up a victory in the 100 breaststroke with her time of 1:14.21.

Rachel Acheson, Martin, Timmerman and Bubp teamed for a victory in the 200 medley relay, while Madi Grover, Martin, Timmerman and Bubp combined for a 200 freestyle relay win.



Patriots top Legends



FORT WAYNE — Jay County’s wrestling team picked up its eighth win of the season Tuesday in defeating the North Side Legends, 69-12.

Zakk Atkins won his 120-pound match over Donyell Smith by a 9-3 decision. At 126, Mitchell Ferguson pinned Matt Miller in 1 minute, 6 seconds. Jackson Lyons pinned Satawat Sripeng in 1:07 at 128, Derrick Potter won his 152-pound match over Sam Dick with a pin in 1:23, and Mitchell Frasher (170) pinned Jared Wright in 2:35.

At 182 pounds, Daniel Ostrowski scored a first-period pin, while Max Schmit (195) pinned Lawrence Davis in 3:09. At 220, Gaven Hare pinned Preston McElroy in 1:50.

Kyndal Huey (106), Jade Zorn (113), Shawn Ashley (132) and Garrett Mann (145) all received forfeits in their respective matches.

The Patriots move to 8-0 on the year.



SA beats Knights



OSSIAN — The South Adams wrestling team closed out the dual portion of its season Tuesday with a 48-18 victory over the host Norwell Knights.

Jordan Heckler, a 182-pound Starfire, defeated Jered Cross by a 5-2 decision, and Isaiah Baumgartner (220) won by a 5-1 decision.

Taylor Cuellar (285), Wyatt Miller (113), Brandon Wynn (120), Briar Goodwin (132) and Josh Lahr (145) all picked up pins in their respective matches.

Winning by forfeit were Michael Rupp (106), Austin McKibben (126) and Keegon Boxell (152).
