BERNE — Almost a month earlier, Starfire senior Jared Grabau took advantage of a lapse in defense to beat the Heritage Patriots at the buzzer.

Friday night, his heads-up play sank another Patriot squad.

Grabau slipped free on an inbound pass near mid-court for a wide-open layup, and Jason Schlosser’s desperation 3-pointer from the corner missed the mark as the South Adams High School boys basketball team held on for a 37-34 victory against the Jay County Patriots at StarDome.

“I saw it. It is one of those things that if you see it and you shout it out, it’s probably not going to happen,” said SAHS coach Andy Brown, whose team moves to 7-5 on the year and 2-1 in Allen County Athletic Conference play.

South Adams also snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Patriots.

Jay County, which drops to 7-6 (1-2 ACAC) and travels to Poneto to take on Southern Wells tonight, had the ball with 1:06 to play and trailing the Starfires 35-34. Jay Houck caught a pass in the right corner, drove along the baseline and stopped under the hoop, looking for a teammate to pass to. The official standing near the basket called Houck for traveling — the 11th and final turnover for the visitors — with 40.7 seconds remaining.

The Patriots had three fouls to give, so back-to-back whistles took more than 17 seconds off the clock.

As Marcus Teeter was holding the ball on the other side of mid-court near the scorer’s table with 23.2 seconds left, Grabau slipped toward the basket, caught Teeter’s pass and lifted a left-handed layup to put the Starfires ahead by three with 18 ticks left on the clock.

“I have no idea what happened,” JCHS coach Chris Krieg said. “We don’t communicate — that is half our problem defensively, we don’t communicate — then boom we give up a layup. Now you’ve got to have a three just to tie the game.”

Jay County junior Cole Stigleman — he led the Patriots with 11 points — brought the ball up the court and was blanketed by the Starfire defense. He passed to his left to Schlosser, who had to dribble to the left corner and launch an off-balance attempt as he was falling out of bounds. The potential game-tying shot hit the front of the rim, and the buzzer sounded as the Starfires and Patriots fought for the rebound.

“I am totally disappointed in our effort tonight,” said Krieg, whose team led 28-20 less than two minutes into the second half, then went more than eight minutes without scoring. “We did not deserve to win this basketball game.”

After Holton Hill had a put-back on a Schlosser miss, Jay County missed its next five shots, had three turnovers and had a shot blocked to close out the quarter. South Adams, meanwhile, scored the final 10 points of the third period and first two of the fourth for a 32-28 advantage.

J.D. Groh and Teeter both sank 3-pointers from the right wing, Teeter drained four free throws and Grabau also had a layup to help the Starfires take the lead for good.

“It was huge,” Brown said of keeping Jay County from scoring and his team’s 12-0 run. “I thought (Jay County) came out in the third quarter, if you want to be honest they kind of punched us in the mouth there.”

After Teeter — he had a game-high 18 points, a dozen of which were from beyond the 3-point line — made two free throws, Brown called a timeout to get his team refocused.

“They finished the second quarter really well,” Brown added. “They opened the third really well so you kind of get worried sometimes.”

The Patriots, who have now lost two of their last three games, scored eight straight points to end the first half.

But it was South Adams that had the better second half.

“You can’t win very many ball games scoring 11 points in the second half,” Krieg said.

Houck, who was averaging 18.1 points per game, was held to just eight points. Schlosser (12.8 PPG) finished with five.

Jordan Stultz came up with a huge steal in the final minute and drained the game-winning 3-pointer from the left corner as Jay County won 41-38 in overtime.

The Patriots (7-4) led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, but a 15-4 advantage in the fourth by the Starfires put the game into overtime.

Parker Grimes led the Patriots with 12 points, and Matthew Franks joined him in double figures with 10.

Grant Besser led the Starfires with a dozen points, and Joe Stuber chipped in eight.
