FORT RECOVERY — The good news for the Indian boys is they won’t have to see Versailles in the tournament.
A day after the Tigers ended the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team’s undefeated start to the season, their boys caught fire in the second half of a battle between two state-ranked squads. That led to back-to-back tough Midwest Athletic Conference defeats for the Indians.
Division IV No. 7 Fort Recovery allowed the Division III No. 5 Tigers to shoot 61 percent from the field in the final 16 minutes Friday in a 55-48 loss.
The Indians (9-2, 3-1 MAC) had a five-point lead in the third quarter and remained ahead by three early in the fourth. But Alex Wendel’s 3-pointer off of a Connor Custenborder assist with just over five minutes remaining put Versailles ahead for good. The visitors outscored the home team 20-9 in the fourth quarter.
Versailles, led by 18 points from AJ Ahrens, shot 14-of-23 in the second half while the Indians made the eight of their 23 attempts. Keaton McEldowney joined AJ Ahrens in double figures with 16 points. Justen Ahrens added nine points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Caleb Martin scored 13 points to pace the Indians, who were in the game thanks in part to hitting six 3-pointers compared to just one for Versailles. Payton Jutte added 11 points, and Micaiah Cox had seven points and nine rebounds.
Prior to Thursday, the Indian boys and girls basketball teams were a combined 19-1. The Versailles and Fort Recovery boys are in different divisions and therefore won’t meet again, but the girls — they are ranked No. 3 and 4 respecitively in Division III — could.

Reese Rogers was the lone Indian in double figures as he posted 10 points. Grant Knapke and Trevor Vaughn chipped in four points apiece.
