Capsule Reports

Five injured

Five people were injured in a serious vehicle accident Thursday night west of Portland.

Morgan S. Phillips, 20, 311 S. Angle St., Dunkirk, was driving northeast on Indiana 67, near the intersection with county road 300 South, when icy road conditions caused her to lose control of the 2001 Pontiac Grand Am she was driving. The Grand Am slid sideways, crossed the center line and was struck on the passenger side by a southwest-bound 2005 Pontiac Sunfire, driven by Randall L. Sanders, 55, 330 Meadow Lane, Albany.

Phillips and her four passengers were all injured in the accident. Luke W. Moles, 19, 386 W. Pleasant St., Dunkirk, was sitting in the passenger seat of the Grand Am during the accident. He suffered incapacitating fractures and was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. Brian W. Lessing, 24, 316 E. Elder St., Portland, Christopher M. Lessing, 26, 20941 Canada Road, Lake Forest, California, Timothy W. Thompson, 5946 E. Indiana 26, Portland, and Phillips were all taken by ambulance to Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, after complaining of pain and incapacitating injuries.

Sanders, the driver of the Sunfire, refused treatment from first responders at the scene.

Damage in the 11:18 p.m. accident was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.

Sideswipe

A Montpelier man and a Portland man were involved in an auto accident Thursday afternoon.

Nixon D. Kelsay, 69, 7566 E. 800 North, Montpelier, was driving his 1998 GMC Sonoma east on Indiana 18, just east of county road 50 East, and was slowing to turn left into a driveway. Headed eastbound behind Kelsay’s Sonoma was Hal D. Ballard, 7854 E. Fort Recovery Road, Portland, in his 2001 Chevrolet Silverado. Ballard tried to pass the Sonoma, not realizing it was turning. His Silverado struck the driver front side of the Sonoma as it was turning north into the driveway.

Damage in the 4:05 p.m. accident was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.

Right angle crash

A Fort Recovery woman and a Portland man were involved in a vehicle collision Wednesday evening west of Portland.

Stacy A. Stammen, 21, 3066 State Line Road, Fort Recovery, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was driving north on Indiana 67 in a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu when a 2011 Chrysler 300 pulled out in front of her at county road 200 South.

Wesley P. Snyder, 42, 627 E. High St., Portland, was driving the Chrysler that pulled in front of the Malibu and was struck on the passenger side rear.

Damage in the 5:50 p.m. accident was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
