MARION — The Patriot girls closed their regular season by winning every event.

The boys had a strong performance as well.

Jay County High School’s girls and boys swim teams both defeated the Marion Giants on Thursday.

The JCHS girls closed the regular season with a 136-36 victory to move to 11-4 while the boys won 88-73 to improve to 3-10.

Alex Bader and Vivienne Kunkler each won two races for the JCHS girls. Bader was first in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races while Kunkler handled the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints. Erica Hathaway (200 individual medley), Mackensie Knisely (diving), Elizabeth McDowell (100 butterfly), Kaitlyn Dow (100 backstroke) and Jamie Valentine (100 breaststroke) also won their respective events.

For the boys, Garrett Campbell was the lone dual winner, picking up victories in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Orlando Castro (diving), Christopher McDowell (100 freestyle) and Tayler Smeltzer (100 breaststroke) also earned wins.

Both Patriot squads swept all three relays.



Stars sweep Barons

DEKALB — The South Adams swim teams swept the DeKalb Barons on Thursday.

The SAHS girls closed out their regular season by winning every event for a 133-30 victory. The Starfire boys won 82-74.

Ashton Klopp, Brette Klopp and Ashley LeFever were each dual winners. Ashton Klopp won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, twin sister Brette won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke while LeFever was first in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Olivia Von Gunten and Hadi Hawbaker won the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke respectively.

Zach Teeple and Zach Colpaert picked up a pair of victories for the SAHS boys. Teeple won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke as Colpaert was victorious in the 50 and 100 freestyle races.

SA ends with win

BERNE — South Adams’ girls basketball team closed the regular season with its third consecutive victory Thursday, defeating Eastbrook 53-48.

South Adams (13-9) which opens Class 2A Sectional 36 tournament on Tuesday against host Churubusco, trailed Eastbrook (10-10) after the first quarter, 11-9. Eastbrook held a 23-22 margin at halftime, before the home team was able to nab a 37-35 advantage heading into the final quarter.

SAHS junior Lexi Dellinger had a team-high 16 points, with Madi Wurster and Sydney Pierce chipping in 15 points apiece. Calyssa Lehman was the only other Starfire to hit the scoresheet, and she finished with seven points.

The Starfire junior varsity team edged the Panthers 27-25. Emilee Myers scored a dozen points and Lydia Loshe chipped in eight points.



Chiefs down Eagles

DUNKIRK — The East Jay Middle School sixth grade girls basketball teams both defeated the West Jay Eagles on Thursday.

The EJMS A team won 47-14, while the B squad won 9-8.

Olivia Waters and Renna Schwieterman scored 19 and 18 points respectively for the East Jay A team. Eden Abshire and Lydia Keihn chipped in four points each, and Destiny McManus had two points.

In the B contest, Kyle Cross led the Chiefs with six points, including the go-ahead basket with 10 seconds to play. Madison Brunswick added two points and Kelsey Frantz had a free throw.

West Jay’s stats were not provided.



Titans top Eagles

MUNCIE — West Jay’s sixth grade boys basketball teams traveled to Muncie to take on the Northside Titans on Thursday and both returned with a notch in the loss column.

The A squad lost 63-13, and the B team fell 38-11.

Spencer Caldwell led the A team with four points, with Landon Lowe and Skyler Bee adding three points apiece. Tavin Wasson contributed two points, and Gave Goodspeed had one point.

Caldwell also paced the B squad with a nine-point effort. Peyton Bennett had the other two points for West?Jay.



FR falls to Flyers

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams both dropped games to the Marion Local Flyers on Thursday.

The seventh grade squad lost 31-17, and the eighth graders fell 36-21.

Marcus Gaerke tallied six points to lead the seventh grade team. Logan Homan followed with four points, Owen Wenning had three points while Riley Hiser and Owen Jutte had two points each.

Derek Jutte scored 14 points to lead the FRMS eighth graders. Regan Martin notched nine points, Clay Schmitz tallied five points with Brian Bihn and Riley Will chipping in four points apiece.
