Garbacz promoted at Kendallville paper
Steve Garbacz has been named the assistant managing editor for The News Sun and The Star daily newspapers.
Garbacz worked as a reporter for The Commercial Review from 2008 to early 2013, when he left to join The Daily Journal in Franklin.
He has worked for KPC Media Group, a northeastern Indiana media conglomerate, as a reporter and columnist since 2015.
A graduate of Purdue University, Garbacz has received awards from the Hoosier State Press Association, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Associated Press Media Editors.
“Steve has shown exceptional ability as a reporter and writer in his first two years with KPC,” said Dave Kurtz, KPC Media Group executive editor, in a story by The News Sun.
Farmer’s market
The Fort Recovery Merchants’ Association and Chamber of Commerce are working together to start a farmers’ market in the village.
The tentative first day is from 9 a.m. to noon July 29 in the Sunshine Boutique parking lot, 128 N. Wayne St., Fort Recovery. The market is planned for the last Saturday of each month until September, according to an article in the Daily Standard.
Partnership
Allegheny Technologies Incorporated and General Electric Aviation have recently announced a partnership to develop new manufacturing technology.
ATI is the parent company of Portland Forge.
The two companies will construct a research and development pilot production facility to develop a new meltless titanium alloy powder manufacturing technology, according to a press release. The technology is being developed for manufacturing use, such a 3D printing.
The partnership will pair ATI’s operational, technical and project support with GE Aviation’s engineering and development capabilities and technical knowledge of the powders.
“We are pleased to join with GE Aviation to create this innovative next-generation technology joint venture,” Rich Harshman, ATI chairman, president and CEO, said in a prepared statement. “ATI is a recognized leader in advanced speciality materials, and we are excited about the collaboration this new joint venture enables.”
Appointed
Gannett, a media company that owns Muncie Star Press and USA Today, has appointed a new board member.
Matthew W. Barzun, former U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom, is Gannett’s eleventh board member. He has also served as U.S. ambassador to Sweden and was National Finance Chair for Barack Obama’s 2008 election campaign. Barzun graduated from Harvard College, where he received degrees in history and literature.
“We are very pleased to welcome Matthew to our board,” Robert Dickey, Gannett president and CEO, said in a prepared statement. “His career in government and extensive digital business experience make him a tremendous fit for the board at this stage of the company’s transformation.”
Gannett owns over 100 newspapers internationally.
Expanding
Tyson Foods Inc. will invest $59.7 million to expand a distribution center in Pennsylvania, which will double the center’s workforce.
Tyson Foods is the parent company of Tyson Mexican Original in Portland.
The company announced its plans for a 164,000 square foot addition to its Pottsville, Pennsylvania distribution center, which serves the northeast region of the U.S.
The expansion is slated for completion in late 2018 and will add 114 jobs, bringing the total number of center employees to around 220, according to a company press release.
“This expansion will allow us to better service our customers and ship our complete portfolio of protein-packed brands from one distribution center,” said Gregg Uecker, senior vice president of network planning and integration, in a prepared statement. “New technology will also improve team member safety while reducing our carbon footprint.”
Members chosen
Elected officials representing nine counties, including Jay, Delaware and Randolph counties, selected members to serve on Eastern Indiana’s Workforce Development Board.
Eastern Indiana’s Workforce Development Board oversees Eastern Indiana’s workforce development system and ASG Inc., a not-for-profit workforce development organization. The nine counties make up Indiana’s Economic Growth Region 6.
Nine members were chosen to make up the board, according to an ASG press release.
“Eastern Indiana is fortunate to have such a talented group of individuals who have a complementary assortment of impressive backgrounds serve on our Workforce Development Board,” ASG president and CEO Mike Row said in a prepared statement. “With unemployment at historic lows and industry vying for talent like never before, it is incumbent upon us to create innovative, data driven solutions for our workforce. It is my distinct privilege to serve with these uniquely talented individuals.”
No burgers
Most of the McDonald’s restaurants in New Delhi closed this month because their operating licenses had expired, a number of Indian news outlets reported.
Connaught Place Restaurants, the Indian franchisee, closed 41 of its 53 McDonald’s locations. The closing, however, is expected to be temporary.
McDonald’s has more than 400 franchises in 65 different cities in India.
Aussie fried
Yum Brands Inc., parent company of Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, has decided to sell 28 KFC outlets in Australia, Louisville Business First reported this month.
Collins Foods will pay $83.41 million in cash for the outlets in Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia.
It will create the largest chain of fried chicken restaurants in Australia, bringing Collins Foods’ total to 223 KFC locations.
