BERNE — Jay County’s only challenge during the regular season was Wells Community.
Jay County had to fight it off again in the conference meet.
The Jay County Summer Swim Team didn’t win the most races, but relied on its depth to propel it to its seventh consecutive Wabash Valley Conference championship Saturday at Berne Pool.
Jay County, which won 20 of the 62 individual events and only six of the 20 relays, totaled 2,629 points to win the title. Wells Community, which lost to Jay County 626.5-582.5 on June 22, was the runner-up with 2,484. South Adams scored 1,770 for third, Bellmont (899) was fourth and Adams Central (288) finished fifth.
The 13-14-year-old girls led the way for Jay County as they won every event in their age group. Eliza Bader won the long freestyle, butterfly and backstroke races, while Ashlyn Dow took first in the individual medley, breaststroke and short freestyle.
Bader and Dow teamed with Rieley Brewster and Lillian Clemmons to sweep the medley and freestyle relays.
Morgan DeHoff, Mara Bader and Alex Bader each picked up a trio of WVC championships. DeHoff (9-10-year-old) won butterfly, IM and short freestyle; Mara Bader (11-12-year-old) took first in butterfly, IM and breaststroke; and Alex Bader (15-and-over) won butterfly, breaststroke and short freestyle.
Single-event winners were Kenzie Huey (9-10-year-old backstroke), Josh Monroe (11-12-year-old breaststroke), Griffin Mann (13-14-year-old breaststroke), Jason Minnich (15-and-older 200 freestyle) and Garrett Campbell (15-and-older butterfly).
Elizabeth McDowell, Vivienne Kunkler, Alex Bader and Erica Hathaway combined to win the 15-and-older freestyle and medley relays.
The 9-10-year-old girls freestyle relay of Azalea Smith, Natalie Carreno, DeHoff and Huey finished first, as did the 15-and-older boys freestyle relay team of Chase McFarland, Ben Strausburg, Campbell and Minnich.
Ashton Klopp, a 2017 South Adams High School graduate who will swim at University of Findlay, set a new conference record in the 200-meter freestyle. She swam to a time of 2 minutes, 18.09 seconds, beating former Starfish swimmer Aimee Bixler’s time of 2:20.1.
