Ardagh certified for fifth consecutive year

Business Roundup

Just in time for Glass Days, Ardagh Group’s Dunkirk plant has been awarded an Energy Star plant certification for the fifth consecutive year.

The certification is awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency for superior energy performance and efficiency.

Dunkirk’s plant, which featured Glass Days tours Friday, produces more than 2 million longneck bottles each day for Budweiser.

Two other Ardagh manufacturing plants — in Bridgeton, New Jersey, and Madera, California — were also Energy Star recipients.

Ardagh Group is the only U.S. glass container manufacturer to earn the Energy Star certification.

“Through this achievement, we have demonstrated our dedication to the environment by continuing to maximize the use of recycled materials at our facilities and optimizing our manufacturing operations to improve energy performance,” John Riordan, president and chief executive officer of Ardagh Group, Glass-North America, said in a prepared statement.

To meet the EPA’s performance standards, the plants focused on upgrading and optimizing the energy performance of glass furnaces, utilizing recycled glass, installing energy-efficient lighting and repairing air compressor leaks.

Since 2010, the company has received 29 Energy Star certifications. This was the third consecutive year for Bridgeton and the fourth consecutive year for Madera.

The Energy Star program was introduced by the EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based program.

Ardagh employs about 23,500 in 22 countries and has global sales of about 7.7 billion Euros annually. In addition to the Dunkirk plant, it is the parent company of the former Anchor Glass plant in Winchester.

Dollar suit

The Charlotte Observer reported this week that the ongoing feud between dollar-store retailers is continuing with a new lawsuit.

The newspaper said Charlotte-based Dollar Express is suing Family Dollar and its parent company Dollar Tree claiming that the company had set out to “kill Dollar Express,” a chain started after Family Dollar had to sell off more than 320 stores because of anti-trust concerns.

“In its suit, Dollar Express alleges that Dollar Tree and Family Dollar sabotaged the chain of stores that it sold to Dollar Express by hiring and promoting unqualified workers and opening new Family Dollar-branded stores in close proximity to Dollar Express stores — using Dollar Express’s confidential information,” the newspaper reported.

Physician retiring

Longtime Geneva area physician Dr. Paul Steenburg has announced he is retiring in June.

A public reception honoring the doctor will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. June 21 in the second floor meeting room of Geneva Town Hall.

Dr. Steenburg initially practiced from offices near Adams County road 950 South and U.S. 27 when he was affiliated with Jay County Hospital. He later joined the medical staff at Adams County Memorial Hospital at the hospital-owned Geneva Family Medicine facility at 100 N. Main St., Geneva. That office will continue seeing patients, staffed by nurse practitioner Camille Elick-Shawver. Dr. Mark S. Gresla will be in Geneva to see patients on Tuesdays. The hospital is in the process of recruiting a new family doctor for the Geneva area.

Historic purchase

Mark and Shelli Leavell have purchased the historic building at 119-125 W. High St. in downtown Redkey and plan to open a retail business there.

Mark works at FCC (Indiana) in Portland, and Shelli owns and operates Wiggles ’N’ Giggles Child Care in Redkey.

They plan to open Redkey Junktion in one of the storefronts in the building.

Cooper purchase

Cooper Farms has purchased the former Les Wenning Motors location in Fort Recovery and will use the service area of the dealership as a maintenance and repair shop for its vehicles.

The front of the dealership building will be the new home of Cooper’s hog farm service team.

“Our turkey service team and our hog service team had been housed in the same location,” said Eric Ludwig, director of corporate development. “This additional service space will allow us to separate the two teams to avoid cross-traffic between the two species.”

Better meetings

Shafer Leadership Academy will be presenting a program on “mastering the one-on-one meeting” at John Jay Center for Learning in Portland from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 14. The cost is $30.

A free training session for members of Jay County Chamber of Commerce on how to deal with active shooter incidents in the workplace is set for 3 to 4:30 p.m. June 15 at the Community Resource Center, 118 S. Meridian St., Portland.
