Series will share volunteer stories

Editorial

It’s been said in this newspaper more than a few times that ours is a special community.

That fact is made clear time and time again…

•When the floodwaters are rising and so many of our fellow residents help fill and place sandbags.

•When someone is ill and hundreds come together to raise money, cook meals and offer other support.

•When a group of students seeks to raise $25,000 to pack food for starving children and donations soar past that number.

Those are just a few of the plentiful examples.

We know many of the stories about our neighbors who give of their time participating in service organizations, organizing festivals, helping at the hospital, tutoring children and assisting those struggling with addiction.

But there are even more stories that we don’t know, that haven’t been told on our pages or the airwaves of WPGW or anywhere else.

There are those who work quietly behind the scenes, who never see their pictures in the newspaper or voices on the radio.

We’d like to change that.

For several years now, we’ve made a habit of putting together a summer series. They have focused on things to do in town and out of town, the little slices of life we see every day but rarely think about, the history of our schools.

This year, we’re going to tell stories about local volunteers, with a special focus on those who might not typically get a lot of attention.

Do you know someone who fits that description? Give us a call — (260) 726-8141 — or send us an email — [email protected] — and let us know.

Starting this week, we’ll run a story about a different volunteer each Saturday (with the possible exception of a week off for the fair) throughout the summer. These pieces should provide a little bit of inspiration to kick off each weekend.

As we’ve said before, this community is a special place.

We hope, over the course of the summer, you enjoy learning a little bit more about your neighbors who make it so. — R.C.
