House fire

Portland Fire Department responded to a house fire early Sunday morning.

At 1:37 a.m., Jay County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a fire at 1124 W. Meadow Lane. Twelve Portland firefighters responded to the house fire, and it was under control less than an hour later.

According to Fire Chief Mike Weitzel, the cause of the fire is still unknown and an investigation is being conducted today.

Deer struck

Two drivers struck deer with their vehicles.

Jamie M. Rice, 35, 903 N. Walnut, Hartford City, was driving her 2011 Chrysler Jeep Grand Cherokee west on Indiana 26 when a deer ran onto the roadway. She was unable to avoid striking it with the Jeep.

Damage in the 1:15 p.m. Saturday accident was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.

Tania L. Lewis, 24, 78 S. Amanda Drive, Lot 6, Winchester, was driving her 2005 Ford Escape north on U.S. 27 near county road 450 South when a deer entered the roadway. Lewis said she was unable to avoid striking the animal with the front of her car.

Damage in the 3:56 a.m. Monday accident was estimated between $1,000 to $2,5000.

Backing crash

A rural Portland man was backing a vehicle Friday afternoon when it collided with another car.

Mark D. Coppola, 49, 2115 W. 800 South, was driving his 2015 Toyota Tundra when it hit the rear of a 2015 Nissan Rogue while backing out of the Circle K gas station, 325 N. Meridian St., Portland.

The Rogue is registered to Joseph M. and Susan K. Bechtol, 213 E. Walnut.

Damage in the 2:55 p.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 to $2,5000.

Off road

A rural Portland teen lost control of his vehicle and went off the road Sunday afternoon.

Jake D. Boolman, 17, 1581 S. 300 West, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he picked up a 2008 Chevrolet HHR from a local garage and was headed north on Mount Pleasant Road near its intersection with county road 400 South. After entering a curve, Boolman said the steering locked up and he could not complete the turn, causing the vehicle to go into the ditch on the southwest side of the road before flipping and coming to a stop on the opposite side of the road.

The HHR was registered to Lynn Boolman Auto Sales, same address as driver.

Damage in the 3:30 p.m. accident was estimated between $5,000 to $10,000.
