Museum open house set for PHS alumni
Taking Note
The Jay County Historical Society will hold an open house at the museum next weekend in conjunction with the Portland High School Alumni Banquet.
The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 18.
Telling tales
Storyteller Carol Knarr Gebert will be sharing folklore tales about tricksters at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Jay County Public Library.
Gebert, who is a theatre instructor at Jay County High School, has been a professional storyteller for 10 years.
Her presentation next week will will take place in the Community Room and is expected to last about 60 minutes. Audience participation will be included, and while the tales are geared for a young audience they’ll be enjoyed by anyone.
“Every culture has a trickster,” said Knarr. “Fox, coyote, and rabbit are popular animal tricksters who love to trick others and often times get tricked themselves.”
Immigration program
Portland residents Vera Heffner and Ilona Beck will provide the program at the Tuesday, June 27, meeting of the Jay County Historical Society at the museum.
The sisters will talk about emigrating from West Germany to Jay County in 1957.
Feel the beat
The sounds and movement of African drums will come to Jay County Public Library on Monday, June 19.
Members of Bi-Okoto Drum and Dance Theatre and the School of African Cultures will be at the library beginning at 11 a.m.
Established in 1994 and headquartered in Cincinnati, the group will instruct participants in a broad range of dance styles. The program is geared for third graders through adults.
The program is one of several that are part of the library is offering as part of its Summer Challenge.
The group has performed in 48 states.

The J. Taylors, Jonathan and Janelle Taylor, will perform at the Muensterberg Plaza clock tower in Berne on Friday, June 16,
The Blind Date Band will perform at that venue on Friday, July 7, as part of the Berne series.
