The Rockets had a difficult time keeping the Mariners off the base paths.

The Grand Lake Mariners batted around during an inning on two separate occasions, plating six and eight runs respectively in a 19-2 thrashing of the Portland Rockets in seven innings Thursday night at Portland Memorial Park’s Runkle-Miller Field.

“They are the real deal,” said Portland Rockets manager Randy Miller, whose team was outscored 37-7 as it was swept by the Mariners in a three-game series. “I like playing baseball. I can take a good butt kicking. I think our guys can take a little humble pie. And when you see it done right you tip your cap and say ‘Man, I want to be like that.’”

Max Habegger, Portland’s starting pitcher, struck out Cole Womack to begin the third inning and got RJ Williams to fan as well, but a dropped third strike and a throwing error by the catcher began the scoring for Grand Lake.

The Mariners, who no-hit Portland in a 10-0 win Tuesday and held off a late rally for an 8-5 win Wednesday, jumped out to a 5-0 lead, highlighted by a two-run single from Blake Beckman. Nic Varda also had an RBI in the inning.

Portland (2-3) cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth. Zach Tanner walked and Mitch Waters hit the second of his two singles on the day. TJ Lindstrand singled Tanner home, and a throwing error allowed Waters to trot to the plate to make it 5-2.

One inning later, things went awry for Habegger and the Rockets.

Grand Lake sent 10 batters to the plate and notched five hits, including three consecutive singles to lead off the inning, to score six runs and begin the rout.

Steven Fitzsimmons, Jeff Timko, Varda, Womack and Beckman all had RBIs in the inning.

“They are in postseason form,” Miller said. “We’re in preseason form. We have guys that are kind of hurting three days in a row.”

To make matters worse, Grand Lake sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh inning, ripping seven hits off 2016 Jay County High School graduate Chandler Jacks. Womack hit a two-run home run and later had an RBI double to finish a single shy of the cycle. Nate Ostmo also had an RBI double.

“It’s a wake-up call,” Miller said. “You’ve got to be ready, man. … We might have got waxed a little bit.”

Waters, who had a single in the top of the first Wednesday to break up a streak of nine consecutive innings without a hit, had a third of Portland’s hits on Thursday. Tristen Becker hit a double down the right field line in the bottom of the seventh, and Kyle McKibben had a single during the fifth inning.

But the Mariner offense was just too much for Habegger and Jacks.

“That might be the best team we’ve seen in some time,” Miller said.
