Portland got back in the win column.
Having had little time to lick their wounds after being swept by the Grand Lake Mariners during the week, the Portland Rockets won four straight games as it hosted a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend at Portland Memorial Park’s Runkle-Miller Field.
Portland (6-3), which lost three consecutive games from Tuesday to Thursday, defeated the Summit City Sluggers by scores of 6-5 and 9-4 on Saturday. The following day, the Rockets kept the momentum by beating the Fort Wayne Flippin Frogs 10-7 and 14-8 in the first meetings between the two teams.
Mitch Waters, a 2002 Jay County High School graduate, and Tristen Becker both had two hits in the first game against Summit City. Waters also made his season debut on the bump, notching the save in relief of Dan Bollenbacher. The South Adams product struck out seven in moving to 2-0 on the year.
Garrett Scott got the win in game two, which also saw Jay County High School junior twins Michael and Ryan Schlechty make their Rocket debuts. Ryan Schlechty tossed an inning of relief, while both had RBIs at the plate.
Dustin Lewis had a pair of hits for the Rockets, and Becker finished with four hits on the day.
Bill Geeslin tossed five innings to get the win in the opener Sunday. Derek Thobe threw the final two frames to hold off the Flippin Frogs. Rico Acosta, a Miami native, had three hits in his first game as a Rocket.
Dalton Tinsley, who struggled at the plate against the Mariners, hit a three-run blast in the second game Sunday. He finished with three hits.
Zach Tanner, TJ Lindstrand and Kyle McKibben also had a pair of hits in game two.
After playing nine games in eight days, Portland has a couple days of rest before returning to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday as it hosts the Sluggers.
Derek Thobe is the projected starter.
