BERNE — South Adams has taken the next step toward completing the second phase of its high school renovation project in 2018.
On the recommendation of superintendent Scott Litwiller, South Adams School Board on Tuesday hired Dan Rawlins of Performance Services as the design-criteria developer for the 2018 portion of the project.
The first phase of the project, which includes creating a secure office area and renovating some of the classrooms around the media center, is underway and expected to be substantially complete before classes resume in August.
Rawlins, who worked with South Adams on phase one, explained the process and timeline for the second phase, which could include renovating the remaining classrooms around the media center as well as the media center itself and the former office area, beginning with a public hearing on the project at the July 17 board meeting. The board would then send out requests for qualifications with a goal of selecting a design team by September and then finalizing plans for the renovation in December.
Board members Arlene Amstutz, John Mann, Mitch Sprunger, Julie Mansfield, John Buckingham and Amy Orr, absent Landon Patterson, briefly discussed the funding options for the project that they had extensively reviewed last month. Though they did not take a vote, board members indicated they are leaning toward a formula that would include using $647,051 from the rainy day fund, $445,148 from the sale of the former elementary school property, $259,801 that is no longer needed for the energy savings program and about $125,000 in already-encumbered capital projects money.
Amstutz and Mann both indicated that they are not interested in bonding, and there was also sentiment against the option of selling off part of the school farm.
The board also appointed engineer Michael Lubbehusen, director of buildings and maintenance Dave Vorhees, high school principal Trent Lehman, Rawlins, Litwiller and Mann to the technical review committee for the 2018 renovation project.
Board members also approved a series of raises, including a 2-percent increase for classified support staff. It is in addition to pay increases for longevity.
The board raised its daily bus driver base rate to $60 from the current $52.56, longevity to 20 cents per day per year of longevity from the current 17 cents, its mileage rate to 35 cents from the current 30 cents and its field trip rate to $11 per hour from the current $10.
Rates for substitute teachers were increased by $5 to $80 for those with a regular teaching license and $75 for those with a substitute license.
In other business, the board:
•Honored the South Adams baseball team as an example of excellence. It won 15 games and the sectional championship.
•Learned 94 percent of South Adams third graders passed the IREAD-3 test, well above the state average of 83.3
•Agreed to allow Agape Respite Care to use the high school softball field for games July 10, 12, 17, 19, 24 and 26.
•OK’d an agreement with the Town of Geneva to provide a school resource officer at a cost of $50,281. The school will apply for a grant to reimburse half of that cost.
•Decided to allow Litwiller to transfer up to $250,000 from the transportation fund to the rainy day fund. The final amount has not yet been determined.
•Approved employment for the following: Kaitlin Litwiller as a one-year temporary kindergarten teacher; Stephanie Lynn Carroll as a business teacher; Lori Ness as a high school custodian; Jacob Amstutz, Rebecca Dailey, Lisa Creek, Homero Garcia-Vivar, Alissa Goldsworth, Katelin Hawbaker, Cara Hill, Diane McClung, Alexandria Rosswurm, Ashley Stewart and Sydne Zuber as tutors for the migrant education resource center; JD Keller, Kristin Miller, Andy Sommer, Sandy Sprunger, Lonnie Teeple and Valerie Yoder as elementary summer school teachers; and Ethan Blomeke and Chase Tackett as summer school custodians.
•Approved coaches for the fall season, including the following head coaches: Grant Moser (football), Ashley Buckingham (volleyball), Luke McClung (boys soccer), Chad Mitchell (girls soccer), Josh Zurcher (boys tennis), Seth Sprunger (girls golf), Kristin Miller (cheerleading) and Clint Anderson (cross country).
•Learned Litwiller is considering hiring a part-time data specialist to gather and submit data to Indiana Department of Education for online testing and other reports. South Adams has budgeted for such a position for several years, but it has thus far not been filled. Those duties are currently being handled by network technician Nathan Houser.
•Accepted the following extra-curricular resignations: Danette Von Gunten (middle school track coach), Trevor Sprunger (middle school girls basketball), Morgan Mitchell (middle school girls basketball), Leslie McPeek (middle school volleyball), Mindy Lindsey (part-time special ed aide), Emilie Walter (part-time special ed aide), Nathan Houser (auditorium director), Jane Hirschy (full-time special education aide) and Marsha Sonnentag-Groh (part-time library aide). Also approved a leave of absence for Jennifer Thomson through Oct. 13.
•OK’d the following field trip requisitions: marching band June 26 to Hamilton Ohio for a clinic and performance by Drum Corps International and July 20 to Cedar Point; the football team July 15 through 17 to a camp at Trine University; and the cross country teams to a champ July 31 through Aug. 4 at Chain O Lakes State Park and Sept. 22 and 23 to the Culver Academy Invitational.
•Accepted $900 in donations, including $500 from the American Legion, for the cost of girls basketball summer programs.
