FORT RECOVERY — A series of projects are underway at Fort Recovery schools during summer break.
Superintendent Justin Firks updated Fort Recovery School Board on the progress of the projects at Tuesday night’s meeting.
The board also tabled a decision to approve student handbooks after concerns were raised by a parent and discussed the possibility of hiring a trainer through Mercer Health.
Firks said a number of maintenance projects and upgrades are underway or soon to begin at the elementary/middle school, including removal of damaged decorative plywood on top of the building, resealing and weatherizing the building’s exterior brick and removing the old playground and installing its replacement. At the high school, work is already underway to replace carpet, repair the concession stand roof and refinish the floor of Fort Site Fieldhouse.
Board members Mitch Ervin, Jose Faller, Mike Grube, Aaron Guggenbiller and Ginny Fortkamp tabled a decision to approve the student handbooks for the next school year after hearing concerns from parent Paula Knope. Knope, whose daughter Shannon recently graduated second in her class from Fort Recovery High School, questioned a section of the handbook that said class rank determinations are based on seven semesters of grades, but adds a stipulation saying that the eighth semester could be considered.
The board understood her concerns and said they will discuss what action to take and possibly changing the way that section of the handbook is written.
The board also discussed the possibility of hiring a trainer for the upcoming school year. During the 2016-17 school year, the district did not employ a trainer. Firks said he was concerned about liability and access to treatment for opposing teams, which typically provide a trainer when Fort Recovery plays away games.
“We should offer that same courtesy,” said Ervin.
Mercer Health’s Community Sports and Therapy Center offered Fort Recovery a contract for a trainer who would work up to 1,750 in 10 months at a cost of $15,000. The board did not vote on the proposal Tuesday, but will consider the cost and review which funds could be used to pay for the contract.
In other business, the board:
•Approved the following: participation in Federal Title programs and other federal and state programs, including the free and reduced lunch program; a three-year contract with Northwest Ohio Area Computer Services Cooperative; returning advances totaling $27,000 from the Title I disadvantaged children, improving teacher quality and public school preschool funds to the general fund; renewal of liability, fleet and property insurance with Southwestern Ohio EPC Insurance; renewal of liability insurance for eligible school groups ( such as athletics, academic and band boosters) at a cost of $70 each per year; setting the superintendent’s bond at $50,000 with Fort Recovery Insurance Agency; a contract with Frank Dues for removal of playground equipment at the elementary/middle school; and handbooks for the 2017-18 school year.
•Accepted the resignation of Lisa Zehringer as a non-teaching employee.
•Approved April Bihn, Joseph Bruns, Ronald B. Evers, Travis Guggenbiller, Tracy Hein Evers, Brady Kahlig, Matthew Kerns, Patricia Lefeld, Marcia Weigel and Courtney Wilker as van drivers; and John Bihn, Nicholas Brockman, Jerry Byram, Christopher DuHamel, Charles Etzler, Lisa Fullenkamp, Michael Gower, Joseph Hawk, Nancy Reinhard, Michael Thien, Ryan Thien, Randall Wendel, Kurt Wendel, Roger Wenning and Herbert Westgerdes as substitute bus drivers.
•Accepted nearly $5,100 in donations, $5,000 of which came from Mercer County Commissioners for science, technology, engineering and math programs.
•Approved supplemental contracts for Maura Gavit (middle school and high school show choir), Bob Leverette (freshman boys basketball coach), Olivia Grieshop (assistant girls basketball coach), Jeff Vaughn (junior varsity girls basketball coach), Dave Blockberger (junior high boys basketball coach), Mark Hubbard (junior high assistant boys basketball coach) and Theresa Lennartz (assistant volleyball coach).
•OK’d field trips for middle school arts students May 23 to Cincinnati, FFA students June 7 and 8 to Richmond and FFA students July 10 through 14 to Carrollton.
•Approved changes to elementary and middle school student fees. No fees were increased by more than $5 except for third and fifth grade, which will see a $6.30 and $6.72 increase respectively, because of new purchase of Chromebooks for elementary students.
