Arts Place wraps up successful campaign
Taking note
Arts Place ended its annual campaign this month, raising an all-time record amount of $421,024. That surpasses the goal of $420,000 and is $5,704 more than was raised last year.
The regional arts organization has set campaign records for the past four years.
“Our numerous volunteers, solicitors, and staff in Jay County, Auglaize/Mercer County, and Blackford County went above and beyond this year,” campaign chair Wes Schemenaur said in a prepared statement. “Of course, a special thanks goes out to the hundreds of donors across the area that made this tremendous effort possible.”
Marking its 50th year, Arts Place works regionally from St. Marys, Ohio, to Blackford County, Indiana, providing a variety of arts programming, performances and instruction. Its Arts in the Parks program reaches hundreds of young people throughout the region.
Dean’s list
Julie Valentine, Portland, has been named to the dean’s list for the second semester of the academic year at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.
A senior majoring in fashion communication, she is the daughter of Mark and Marianne Valentine, Portland. She’s a graduate of Jay County High School.

There’s still time to get involved in Jay County Public Library’s one million page challenge this summer.
So far more than 375 people have signed up and accepted the challenge to read at least 2,017 pages each this summer.
A number of prizes are being offered, and the grand prize winner will have the chance to select a worthy non-profit for a $1,000 donation if the million page challenge is met.
The challenge receives support from Delta Theta Tau, Portland Kiwanis, Portland Lions, the Evening Optimists, Gamma Nu, Tri Kappa, the Goodrich Family Foundation, Bollenbacher and Associates, and Friends of the Library.

Suzi Parron, author of “Barn Quilts” and “Following the Barn Quilt Trail,” will speak at Jay County Public Library at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 24.
She has photographed more than 100 barn quilts.
