MARION — Lucy Laux began her track season in record-breaking fashion.
Laux set a new school record Friday for the Jay County High School girls track team as it started its indoor season at the Marion Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan University.
She ran to a time of 8.44 seconds in the 60-meter dash, breaking the record of her sister Emma, a 2016 graduate who now runs for Butler University. She placed 10th in the event.
Laux was also second in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 11.75 inches.
Kendal Garringer was second in high jump at 5 feet, and Gwen Omstead was ninth in shot put with a distance of 29 feet, 8.5 inches.
Freshman Calli Stigleman was 14th in the 60 dash (8.61), Bekah Corwin was 11th in shot put (29 feet, 3.75 inches) and Alli Campbell finished 19th in the 60 hurdles (12.22 seconds).
The 4x400 relay team of Erika Kunkler, Briana Muhlenkamp, Taylor Homan and Kelsey Burden finished fourth in 4 minutes, 29.82 seconds. The 4x800 relay team of Erika Kunkler, Olivia Kunkler, Gabby Kunkler and Kendra Muhlenkamp was also fourth in 10:43.94. Calli Stigleman, Renee Omstead, Hanna Dillon and Hallie Fields combined to place sixth in the 4x200 relay in 2:00.5.
Cheer takes third
SANDUSKY, Ohio — The JC XTreme Tiny Level 1 cheer team finished third in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame National Championship on Saturday at Kalahari Resort.
The squad, which ranges in age from 4 to 6 years old, also received a pin to recognize zero deductions for its routine.
Two other teams from JC Tumbling & Gymnastics in Portland competed in the national championships. The Junior Level 2 squad was sixth, and the Youth Level 1 squad placed eighth.
