Haggenjos is recipient of medical award

Lee Haggenjos, the son of Dr. Mark and Donna Haggenjos of Portland, is the recipient of the Martin Lipsky Award for Excellence in Family Medicine.

The Department of Family & Community Medicine selected Haggenjos for the award which is given to a graduating senior entering a family medicine residency who most exemplifies the characteristics of altruism, compassion and intellectual curiosity.

Haggenjos will be presented with the award at the 5th Annual Honors Day Ceremony on May 19 at the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.



Park pass

Anyone wanting to visit an Indiana State Park may be able to check out a free pass from Jay County Public Library.

A free pass is available through the Annual Pass Library Check-out Program, a partnership between Indiana State Parks and the Indiana State Library to encourage visitation to libraries and parks.

Visit the library at 315 N. Ship St. in Portland to check out the availability of the pass.



Eating for seniors

Eating out at area restaurants in April can benefit senior citizens.

The fundraising event “Dine for Seniors” will take place between April 3 and 9. Designated restaurants will donate a portion of a diner’s check to LifeStream Services during this time.

On Monday, April 3, Panera Bread and IHOP in Muncie will participate 4 to 8 p.m.; on Tuesday, April 4, Applebee’s in Muncie will participate from 4 to 9 p.m.; on Wednesday, April 5, Panda Express in Muncie will partiipcate from noon until 8 p.m.; and on Thursday, April 6, Fazoli’s in Muncie will participate between 10:30 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Coupons need to be shown and can be printed or shared on a phone or tablet by visiting www.lifestreaminc.org/dineforseniors.

Proceeds will provide in-home care management, transportation and meal delivery for seniors.

Free screenings

Free blood pressure screenings will be given from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Fort Recovery.



NCGLNAC events

The National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture Academic Conference will be held on Saturday, April 22, in the Bubp Memorial Building at the Jay County Fairgrounds.

Also the 14th Annual NCGLNAC Gathering of Great Lakes Nations will be held June 10 and 11 at the Tri-State Gas Engine Association grounds in Portland.

Nominations

Nominations for the 20th annual Jack Cole Award for Volunteerism are being accepted by The Portland Foundation.

The award was established by the Foundation’s board of trustees to honor Cole as its first executive director.

Nominations should be in the form of a letter of recommendation and include the nominee’s name, address and a brief background describing why the nominee is deserving of the award.

The winner will receive a plaque, and a small cash award to be given to the charity of their choice.
