FORT RECOVERY — The Indians are looking for a new coach.

Chris Guggenbiller, who spent the last three years coaching the Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team, will not be retained next season.

“It was a decision that was discussed at length,” FRHS athletics director Kurt Rammel said. “We discussed it with the board and with administration … discussions were held and at the end of the day all parties decided to go in a different direction.”

The move comes two months after Guggenbiller was reinstated as coach during a Feb. 8 school board meeting. He was suspended for two games following a sideline altercation with sophomore Payton Jutte during the fourth quarter of the Tribe’s game Feb. 3 against  Midwest Athletic Conference rival Parkway.

During the Feb. 8 board meeting, Guggenbiller was remorseful for his actions.

“They were out of character and they were not warranted for what took place,” he said to the board and a crowd of more than 50 people. “I wholeheartedly apologize, and you can be rest assured it won’t happen again.”

Rammel said this morning that while the February incident was discussed with the administration and the board, it did not play a major part in the decision to go in a different direction.

During his time coaching the Indians, Guggenbiller compiled a 40-31 record, including sectional titles in each of the last two seasons. The Indians were 7-16 (2-7 MAC) in his first year at the helm and finished 16-7 (6-3 MAC) and tied for third in the conference in year two, during which the Indians lost 57-54 in the district semifinal to eventual champion Lima Perry Commodores.

In 2016-17, the Indians were again 6-3 and tied for third in conference play. They finished 17-8 on the year, and reached the district championship game before another loss to Perry, this time 54-45.

Guggenbiller, who will continue to teach in the district, did not wish to comment on the change, but said via text message, “I enjoyed working (with) coaching the kids. It is something I’ll never forget.”

Rammel said Monday the search for a new coach has begun, and interested applicants can contact him at [email protected]. He hopes to begin the interview process after the May 12 deadline.
