WAPAKONETA, Ohio — Two of the top teams in the state in their respective divisions met on the baseball diamond Monday.
They put on a show for the fans.
The Fort Recovery High School baseball team dropped a back-and-forth affair on Monday, allowing five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 16-15 loss to the Wapakoneta Redskins.
Fort Recovery (11-7), which is ranked No. 10 in the Division IV coaches poll, was ahead of the Division II No. 2 Redskins 15-11 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Wapakoneta drew three straight walks to lead off the frame. A pair of one-out singles scored two runs, and after a walk to load the bases, two runs scored on a fielding error to give the Redskins the win.
Ben Homan, Will Homan, Davis Will and Evan Post each had a pair of hits to lead the Indians. Ben Homan hit a double and had four RBIs, while Will Homan drove in three runs. Kody Shinaberry and Will had two RBIs as well.
Post took the loss in relief, allowing three runs — one earned — on two hits and a pair of walks.
Stars top ’Dogs
NEW HAVEN — The South Adams girls tennis team moved to 9-2 on the season Monday with a 3-2 victory over the New Haven Bulldogs.
The Starfire doubles teams led the way in the victory, as Caralie Farlow and Julia Grabau teamed to win their No. 1 doubles match, 6-0, 6-1 over Allison Mason and Gabby Shuler.
At No. 2 doubles, Sydney Pierce and Breanna Potts defeated Hannah Bathey and Emily Bricker 6-2, 6-3. Both SAHS doubles duos move to 12-2.
At No. 2 singles, Virginia Lagos (5-6) defeated Andrea Jordan 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Haley Gerber (6-7) dropped her No. 1 singles match to Lindsey DeCamp 6-1, 6-1, and Hannah Dull (7-6) fell 6-0, 6-1 to Erica Miller at No. 3 singles.
The South Adams junior varsity team also won, 5-0. Katrina Fosnaugh and Jade Farlow won their respective singles matches 8-2, 8-0.
Cassie Yoder and Sarah Kloepper teamed for an 8-1 doubles victory, Fatima Sandoval and Shayla Welch combined for an 8-1 win, and Kirstien Herman and Michelle Donis were victorious, 6-0.
Stars fall to Bruins
GENEVA — South Adams’ boys golf team lost to the visiting Blackford Bruins on Monday, 177-187, at Golf Club of the Limberlost.
David Muselman posted the No. 1 score for the Starfires, as he carded a 42. Jake Rife was two strokes behind at 44, and Nick Wurster was third on the team with 47.
Eli Hamrick finished with 54 to round out the team score for South Adams.
J.D. Groh also competed, and he shot 57.
FR walks off
FORT RECOVERY — Drew Muhlenkamp drove in the game-winning run Monday as the Fort Recovery junior varsity baseball team beat Lehman Catholic, 8-7.
Lehman Catholic scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at seven. In the home half of the frame, Joe Muhlenkamp drew a two-out walk, and Gabe Combs followed with a single. Drew Muhlenkamp, who already had two hits on the day, reached on an error and Joe Muhlenkamp came around to score the walk-off run.
Ian Homan led the Indians with three singles, while Riley Dilworth, Joe Homan and both Muhlenkamps each had two hits. Cole Grisez drove in two runs.
Joe Homan got the win in relief for Fort Recovery.
Ponderosa wins
In the opening night of Portland Junior League action, Ponderosa Steakhouse had every player on its roster get a hit in a 23-6 victory over Pioneer Packaging in Rookie baseball.
Nick Snow and Andrew Myer were both 4-for-4 in leading Ponderosa, which got 3-for-3 efforts from both Chase Ninde and Porter Clamme. Maverick Reier was 2-for-3.
Carson Busick was 2-for-2 in the losing effort for Pioneer. Alex Huntsman, Bentley Comer, Sam Wiggins and Dillon Jellison were each 1-for-2.
