BERNE — On Monday, the Starfires became the No. 1 team in the state.

A day later, they showed the ranking is well deserved.

Katelin Augsburger struck out 15 and Isabella Ramirez had three hits and scored three times as the South Adams High School softball team beat the Jay County Patriots, 7-1.

South Adams (15-0, 3-0 Allen County Athletic Conference), which is the top-ranked team in Class 2A, jumped on the Patriots (4-5, 2-1 ACAC) for three runs in the first inning. Ramirez scored on a passed ball, then Jenna Myers hit a two-run single to drive in Taylor Augsburger and Emilie Hammel.

The Starfires took a 4-0 lead in the second inning, and two frames later Jay County hit the board as Chloe Trissel scored on a double steal. The Starfires responded with three more runs in the home half of the fourth inning for the victory.

Katelin Augsburger allowed one hit over seven innings and issued one walk. It was the fifth consecutive game in which she struck out 12 or more batters, pushing her season total to 173.

Emily Corn had two hits for the Patriots.



Girls win two

WOODBURN — The Jay County girls track team picked up two wins Tuesday, finishing first in a three-team meet with host Woodlan and Southern Wells.

Jay County scored 74 points, ahead of the host Warriors (57) and Raiders (13). The Patriots improve to 10-2 on the year.

Kendra Muhlenkamp had two individual wins and helped a first-place relay. The sophomore ran to a time of 5 minutes, 54 seconds, in the 1,600-meter run, and followed with a winning time of 2:39 in the 800 run. She teamed with Erika Kunkler, Olivia Kunkler and Taylor Homan to win the 4x800 relay in 11:33.

Homan also won long jump with a distance of 14 feet, 10 inches, and Rebekah Corwin was first in shot put at 30 feet, 10 inches.

Boys results were not provided.



Haines leads Patriots

FORT WAYNE — Collin Haines had a career-best 35 Tuesday, leading the Jay County boys golf team to a pair of victories at McMillen Golf Course.

Jay County totaled 159, finishing ahead of the Heritage Patriots (176) and the host Woodlan Warriors (196).

Haines shot a 2-over par 35 to lead the Patriots. Kyler Hudson was second on the team with 39, and Jay Houck was two strokes behind with 41. Nick Hayden and Ian James had matching scores of 44 to close out the team score for Jay County.



Stars no-hit Jay

Anna Nussbaum tossed a no-hitter on Tuesday, helping the South Adams junior varsity softball team beat Jay County, 7-1.

South Adams broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the sixth inning before adding four more in the seventh.

Randi Ferguson suffered the loss for Jay County. She had five strikeouts in six innings, and Kailee Denney had one inning of work.
