PONETO — The Patriot bats continued to stay hot.
They’ve still got a hold on the top spot in the conference.
Jay County High School’s baseball team smashed another dozen hits Tuesday, using a five-run fifth inning to beat the host Southern Wells Raiders and remain perfect in Allen County Athletic Conference play.
The Patriots (8-3, 4-0 ACAC) led 4-2 after the fourth inning. They exploded for five runs in the fifth, thanks to RBI singles from twins Michael Schlechty and Ryan Schlechty, an RBI ground out by Jacob Geesaman and a Payton Hensier two-run double. Jay County tacked on three more in the sixth inning, and the Raiders got two back in the home half of the frame.
Max Moser led the Patriots with a double and two singles. Geesaman and the Schlechtys had two hits each, as Ryan Schlechty drove in a team-high three runs. Mitchel Frasher hit a double.
Ryan Schlechty got the win on the bump. He gave up two runs — one earned — on six hits while walking two and striking out one in four innings.
Jay sweeps Rebels
The Jay County girls tennis team sent its seniors out with a bang, sweeping the Randolph Southern Rebels 5-0 on Tuesday for senior night.
At No. 1 singles, senior Megan Johnson defeated Molly Hunt 6-0, 6-3. Johnson’s classmate Francine Muhlenkamp earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lauren Rhotehamel at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Klarisa Hemmelgarn was victorious at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Kera Boisseau.
The Patriots’ No. 1 doubles team of cousins Kayla and Audrey Dirksen cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kenzi Chenoweth and Shyenna Day. Emily Reier and Betsy Muhlenkamp teamed for a 7-5, 6-3 win over Ariana Stinson and Madalyn Mikesell.
JC dips to .500
PONETO — Jay County’s softball team dipped to .500 in conference play Tuesday with an 8-3 loss to the host Southern Wells Raiders.
Southern Wells took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before Jay County (4-6, 2-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) tied the score in the top of the fourth inning. The host Raiders responded with three runs in the home half of the frame for a 4-1 advantage.
The Patriots got as close as 4-3 in the next inning, but the hosts used a four-run fifth to get the victory.
Gwen Butcher led Jay County with two hits and two RBIs. Kady Finnerty also collected two hits. Chloe Trissel, Emily Corn, Katie Carpenter, Sam Twigg and Kensey Litton also had singles.
Loy’s wins
Loy’s Realty earned an 8-6 victory over Boolman’s Auto Sales on Tuesday in Portland Junior League’s Sandy Koufax division.
Zach Twigg led Loy’s with three hits, as Cam Hoover and Mickey Waters each had two singles. Daylen Young, Hunter Young, Joey Goodrich, Javy Sargent and Jesse Basham all had one single.
New Ferrell led Boolman’s with two singles. Kenny Carducci, Keagan Hartzell, Adrick Pogue, Cam Langenkamp, Trenton Webster, Will Straight and Tyler Manor all had one hit.
PG-14 wins
Tony Wood and Rhysin Blowers had two hits apiece as PG-14 defeated Inman U-Loc 12-7 in five innings Tuesday in a game that was shortened because of time limit.
Ryne Goldsworthy hit a double for PG-14, which also got singles from Ricardo Nava and Landon Blowers. Goldsworthy had a game-high three RBIs, with Rhysin and Landon Blowers driving in two runs each.
Ryan Timmerman and Jayden Comer each had a single, with Comer driving in two runs for Inman.
Ferguson leads
Barnett’s Auto Parts outlasted Ponderosa Steakhouse for a 20-18 victory on Tuesday in PJL Rookie baseball action.
Kasen Ferguson hit a home run, drove in three runs and scored three times to lead Barnett’s.
Boston Barnett and Benson Barnett had four runs each, with three and two RBIs respectively. Gavin Thompson added three runs and Skyler Esparza scored twice.
Ponderosa stats were not provided.
Fisher hangs on
Fisher Meats held on for a 16-15 victory over First Bank of Berne in Portland Junior League’s Minor softball action.
Neveah Armstrong had a triple and a single to pace Fisher. Lauren Brewster added a double and two singles, while Jasmine Esparza tallied three singles.
Ava Daniels had a double and Jamie Davis collected two singles in the loss for First Bank of Berne.
