FORT WAYNE — Max Moser hit the first home run of his career Saturday as the Jay County High School baseball team swept the South Side Archers at Elmhurst Field.

Jay County (12-3) racked up 14 hits in a 14-4 victory in game one before exploding for 16 hits in a 16-8 win to get the sweep. The Patriots have won their last nine games, and host sectional rival and defending regional champion Delta at 5 p.m. tonight.

Moser blasted his first career home run in the second game, as he totaled five hits in the two games. He also shared the team-high of seven RBIs with Michael Schlechty, who also tallied four hits.

Ethan Myers finished with seven singles and six RBIs. Jacob Geesaman notched five hits and drove in a pair of runs. Ryan Schlechty had four hits and two RBIs.

Freshman Noah Arbuckle made his varsity debut, recording a win on the mound. He tossed five innings in game one, scattering three hits while giving up one earned run. He walked four and struck out three.

Cole Stigleman picked up his first win of the season, tossing 2 2/3 innings of relief in the second game. He allowed one hit and struck out one.

Jay’s skid ends

HAGERSTOWN — The Patriots’ losing skid has ended.

Chloe Trissel launched a home run and helped the Jay County softball team to a doubleheader sweep Saturday against the Hagerstown Tigers.

Jay County (6-8), which had lost its previous four games, held off a late rally by the Tigers to take the first game 9-7. The Patriots had a 4-3 advantage after the fourth inning before scoring three in the sixth and two in the seventh. Hagerstown responded with three runs in the home half of the inning.

The Patriots trailed 5-2 after the fourth inning in game two. They scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth, and plated the eventual game-winning run in the seventh inning.

Trissel was a triple shy of the cycle in the first game, tallying two RBIs. Kensey Litton also had a home run, while Emily Corn tallied a double and two RBIs.

Kady Finnerty, Hannah Phillips, Trissel and Litton each had a pair of hits in game two.

Boys place sixth

HUNTINGTON — Jay County’s boys track team closed its regular season by placing fifth at the Huntington North freshman/sophomore invitational Saturday.

The host Vikings scored 134 points to win. Mt. Vernon (Fortville) was second with 104 points, and Bellmont scored 87 points for third. Jay County had 51 points, one behind Muncie Central.

Gavin Randall cleared 6 feet in high jump, setting a new career best on his way to a victory in the event.

Cole Watson, Nathanael Day, Matt Paquette and Noah Harris teamed to place second in the 4x100-meter relay. Tayler Smeltzer, Zade Fosnaugh, Ben Strausburg and Candler Hedges combined to finish third in the 4x800 relay.

Isaac Robbins and Harris set career bests in 110 hurdles, placing fifth and fourth respectively. Harris had a time of 17.0 seconds, 0.9 seconds, ahead of Robbins.

Day also set a career best in the 100 dash, placing fifth in 11.8 seconds. Harris also had a career best in long jump, finishing eighth at 17 feet, 7 inches.



Trinity wins

Despite being out-hit, Trinity United Methodist Church defeated Display Craft 9-8 in Rookie softball action of Portland Junior League on Friday.

Kendall Shemenaur and Aleiah Canterbury were both 2-for-3 with two runs for Trinity UMC. Erin Aker, Kaylee Stevenson, Peyton Wendel, Dixie Bellis, Julaya Eldeeb were each 2-for-3 with a run.

Natalie May smacked a double and two singles while also adding a pair of runs for Display Craft, which had a 20-18 advantage in the hit column. Olivia Gillum was 3-for-4 with two runs. Makena Avery, Isabella Osborne and Emily Young were all 3-for-3.
