BLUFFTON — The Patriots’ dominance over conference opponents has continued.
Jay County High School’s boys golf team won the Allen County Athletic Conference round-robin championship for the second straight year Thursday as it finished second in a three-team meet at Timber Ridge Golf Course.
Eastbrook shot 174 to win. Jay County was second with 180, and the host and ACAC rival Bluffton Tigers shot 183 for third.
Senior Jay Houck led the Patriots, shooting a 43 from the No. 3 position. Fellow senior Nick Hayden and junior Collin Haines tied for second on the team with 45, and senior Kyler Hudson was close behind at 47.
Matt Franks also competed, and he carded 59.
Jay County was second to Bluffton in the ACAC tournament last year, and this year’s tournament is slated for 9 a.m. Saturday at Celina Lynx.
Streak hits 12
DECATUR — Jay County’s baseball team pushed its winning streak to a dozen games Thursday with a 7-4 victory over the host Bellmont Braves.
Jay County (15-3) scored three runs in each of the third and fourth innings.
In the third, Mitchel Frasher scored on a wild pitch, Ethan Myers hit an RBI double and Moser smacked an RBI single. Payton Heniser and Cole Stigleman both hit RBI doubles in the fourth inning, and Moser added a base-loaded walk.
Jay County tacked on one more in the fifth inning, before the Braves scored once in the fifth, once in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Stigleman had two singles in finishing with three hits. Moser and Frasher totaled two hits, with Ethan Myers and Wyatt Geesaman each adding singles.
Noah Arbuckle got his second win of his career. He allowed two earned runs on four hits, struck out seven and walked five in six innings.
Fifth leads Stars
BERNE — The South Adams baseball team scored eight runs in the fifth inning to erase an 11-3 deficit in beating the Eastbrook Panthers 13-11 Thursday for senior night.
South Adams (11-11) gave up four runs in the first inning, three in the third and four in the fifth to trail 11-3 heading into the home half of the fifth.
Marcus Teeter had a two-run single to kick off the eight-run frame. Gilbert Lynch had an RBI bunt single, Grant Besser ripped a two-run double and Joe Stuber had an RBI single. Jayden Dull blasted an RBI double and two batters later Nic Stuber drove in Dull with an RBI single to tie the game.
One inning later Joe Stuber had a two-run triple to score the eventual game-winning runs.
Collin Shafer hit a home run and had a double while driving in three runs.
Besser got the win in relief. He didn’t allow a hit, walked one and struck out eight in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Gierhart leads in loss
Catera Gierhart hit a two-run home run, accounting for the only offense as the Jay County softball team lost to the host Northeastern Knights 13-2 in six innings on Thursday.
The Knights scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning for an early 4-0 lead. With one swing of the bat, Gierhart cut the deficit in half in the top of the second inning. Northeastern added four runs in the home half of the second for an 8-2 lead, before adding one more in the third and two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
Hannah Phillips had a double for Jay County (7-9), and Emily Corn added a single.
Kaylee Inman took the loss pitching.
Pioneer wins
Pioneer Packaging racked up 26 hits on Thursday, defeating All-Circuit Electrical 18-14 in Portland Junior League’s Rookie baseball.
Dougie Cox had three singles and a double for Pioneer, which got a triple, two doubles and three RBIs from Jaxson Huntsman. Samuel Wiggins recorded three singles, Carson Busick collected two singles and a double. Bentley Comer, Chance Morgan, Easton Sprunger, Alex Huntsman and Bo Huntsman had two hits apiece.
Loy’s wins
Loy’s Realty edged Local 1620 by a 6-5 margin on Thursday in the Sandy Koufax division of Portland Junior League.
Austin Curtis, Daylen Young and Javy Sargent all had two hits for Loy’s. Cam Hoover, Zach Twigg, Tarron Bentz, Sam Dunlavy and Jay Goodrich each had singles.
Gavin Myers racked up three hits for Local 1620. Darrius Esparza collected two hits, while Riley Huftel, Logan McGinnis and Kaleb Elam all had one hit.
