Summer fun is coming to Jay library

Jay County Public Library is planning lots of fun activities this summer, including its annual reading program.

The theme will be the 2017 Million Page Summer Challenge, with the goal to challenge participants to read one million pages as a collective group and individuals to read 2,017 pages.

When the goal is met, the  grand prize winner  will get to select a local non-profit organization to receive a $1,000 donation.

Registration starts on June 5, the opening day of the program, and the program will continue until July 22.

After each reading log of 300 pages is completed, the reader earns five tickets for raffle prizes.

There will also be weekly raffles for kids to earn gift cards to local restaurants and family activities.

Other summer fun, includes:

•A LEGO build day will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 5.

•Summer Time Fun Brunch will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, June 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 in the Community Room. Toddlers, preschoolers and early elementary-aged children can participate in crafts, sensory bins and creative play.

•Make-It-Take It Crafts activities will be held between 2 and 6 p.m. on Wednesday June 7, 14, 21 and 28. Crafts geared toward elementary aged children can be made anytime and taken home.  

•The kindergarten readiness program KiPS will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday June 6, 13, 20 and 27.


•Family specials will include a Tricksters program at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, an African Drum/Dance activity at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 19, and Meet the Robots at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 29.

•The summer bookmobile stops in June will include Judge Haynes Elementary from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Shwanda’s Greenhouse from 2 to 4 p.m. each Monday; Jay Community Center from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Redkey Elementary from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Hudson Family Park from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. each Wednesday and Bryant Wesleyan Church from 9:30 to 11 a.m., General Shanks from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Katelynn Place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. each Thursday.    

•Clubs in June will include the Coupon Club  at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6; JayCPL Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 19 to discuss the book “The Nest” by Cynthia Sweeney; Writer’s Guild will meet from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 26; Hook & Needles Club will meet from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27.

Fort speaker series    

The first in a series or free presentations which explore Native American topics will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Fort Recovery State Museum.

Jeremy Turner, a member of the Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, will present “Life as a Shawnee on the Ohio Country Frontier.”
