FORT WAYNE — Their team is done, but a pair of Starfires march on.
Caralie Farlow and Julia Grabau, the No. 1 doubles team for the South Adams High School girls tennis squad, advanced to the sectional final with a win Tuesday at Carroll.
Farlow, a senior, and Grabau, a junior, dropped the first set against Macy Wohlford and Kassidy Thompson of Huntington North 7-5. They bounced back to win the second 6-1 to force a third, which they also won by a score of 6-1.
The Starfire tandem moves to 17-2 on the season and reaches the sectional final at 4:30 p.m. today. Farlow and Grabau will meet Payton Krahn and Maddy Heiney of Homestead (11-2), who defeated Abigail Schrek and Megan Lopez of Bishop Dwenger in the other semifinal.
JC hits season low
Collin Haines shot a career-low score Tuesday, helping the Jay County High School boys golf team to a season-low total in finishing first in a three-team meet with the Randolph Southern Rebels and Union City Indians at Portland Golf Club.
JCHS totaled 155, beating its previous season-best score by one stroke. Union City was second with 227, and Randolph Southern did not qualify for a team score.
Haines began his round with a bogey on the par-4 10th hole. He then made par on the next three before a birdie on the par-5 14th. The junior closed his round with four straight pars for a career-low, even par 35.
Nick Hayden was second on the team with a 37, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 15th hole. Jay Houck totaled 41 strokes, including a birdie on the 14th hole, and Kyler Hudson completed the team score with 42.
Williams tops Pioneer
Williams Auto Parts picked up an 11-5 victory over Pioneer Packaging in the Rookie baseball division of Portland Junior League on Tuesday.
Dawson Goldsworthy was 4-for-4 with a pair of runs for Williams. Izzy McAbee and Danton Hanlin had three hits apiece, as McAbee totaled three runs. Kevin Dues and Joe Geesaman had a pair of hits and two runs.
Carson Busick and Bentley Comer were 3-for-3 for Pioneer.
Busick chipped in two runs and Comer scored once. Dillon Jellison and Chance Morgan both had two hits.
Crossroads wins
Crossroads Financial Federal Credit Union earned a 12-3 win over First Bank of Berne on Tuesday in the PJL Minor softball action.
Alexa Mock and Allison Hawbaker both notched one hit and a pair of RBIs, while Hawbaker scored twice. Alyssa Aker tallied one hit, an RBI and one run, Madison Reier recorded a single and two runs while Bralee VanSkyock had a hit and scored a run.
First Bank stats were not provided.
