Tyson Foods Inc., parent company of Tyson Mexican Original of Portland, has partnered with World Resources Institute to develop water conservation and greenhouse gas goals for the company’s supply chain.
A company press release announced the partnership Monday, emphasizing the company’s commitment to sustainability and citing Tyson’s recent decision to promote a healthier workplace for employees and to remove antibiotics from its chicken.
Last month the company hired its first chief sustainability officer, Justin Whitmore.
“We’re collaborating with WRI on aggressive and attainable goals rooted in science. These will give us the opportunity to reduce our environmental impact over time so we can benefit now, and other generations will benefit in the future,” Whitmore said in a prepared statement.
Expansion planned
Smith Brothers, a furniture manufacturer, is planning to build an 92,500 expansion at its facility at 356 Monroe St., Berne. The company is seeking $3 million in economic development revenue bonds for the project from the city, according to the Decatur Daily Democrat.
An ordinance for the request was presented at Berne City Council’s meeting, and will be voted on at the council’s June 12 meeting.
The company plans to add 47 full-time employees with the expansion.
Merger complete
First Merchants Corporation, parent company of First Merchants Bank, has completed its merger with The Arlington Bank of Columbus, Ohio, the company announced Monday.
The Ohio bank has merged into First Merchants Bank, which now has 108 banking centers in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. It also has approximately $7.6 billion in assets, $5.5 billion in loans, $5.9 billion in deposits and total shareholders’ equity of $1.0 billion, according to a press release from the company.
Full integration of the Arlington Bank under First Merchants Corporation is expected to be completed this summer.
Moser earns
Moser Motors of Berne received the 2016 President’s Award from Ford Motor Company.
The honor is given to top-performing Ford dealerships. Only 10 percent of dealerships in the nation receive the award, according to an article in The Berne Witness. The dealership was rated on integrity, professionalism, a lack of negative surprises during purchase and delivery and customers’ desire to repeat the shopping experience.
It was Moser Motors’ 13th time receiving the President’s Award.
The company was also recognized as one of the oldest dealerships in America, according to the same article, having been open for 103 years. It was featured in National Automobile Dealers Association’s centennial celebration magazine, and was listed as the sixth oldest in the nation.

Hartford City firefighters now have a tool to help save pets’ lives during fire runs.
Invisible Fence of Muncie/Anderson donated a pet oxygen mask to the city’s fire department. The masks are used to give oxygen to animals suffering from smoke inhalation.
The donation was part of Invisible Fence Brand’s “Project Breathe” program, aiming to equip every fire station in the U.S. and Canada with these pet masks. According to a company press release they have saved more than 170 pets so far, with more than 18,200 masks donated.

Two employees and a volunteer at Swiss Village Retirement Community were recently recognized by LeadingAge Indiana for their service to the retirement home.
Swiss Village is a member of LeadingeAge Indiana, which represents not-for-profit organizations and facilities for the elderly.
Linda Langel, member of the dietary team, was given the Outstanding Leadership Non-Management Award. Deb Stevens, director of healthcare activities, was awarded for Outstanding Leadership – Management. Jozelyn Holmes, who began volunteering at Swiss Village the age of 11, received the Community Volunteer of the Year award.

Indiana Michigan Power is offering rebates on the purchase and use of smart thermostats.
I&M customers can download IM Home, a cellphone app for Apple and Android phones, that connects with smart thermostats. The app picks ideal times to cool a building or home based on local temperature and occupants’ schedules. During high-energy times, it also offers users the chance to adjust the thermostat a few degrees for a $1.95 credit from I&M and lower energy costs throughout the year.
Participants can receive a rebate of up to $100 on the purchase of a smart thermostat and $125 for its installation.
Offer rejected
A $2.4 billion offer for Lutheran Health Network was rejected by Community Health Systems.
Lutheran has a Lutheran Air helicopter based at Portland Municipal Airport.
Community Health Systems, which owns Lutheran, stated the offer was at least $1 billion too small, the Journal Gazette reported. The bid was placed by 10 Fort Wayne area doctors.
In a statement released Thursday, the doctors said they will continue to seek resolution on the issue.
Walgreens reports
A year after Walgreens launched its mental health online platform, the company is reporting that almost 75 percent of site visitors who have taken screenings are taking active follow-up steps, according to a company press release.
Visitors to http://www.walgreens.com/mentalhealth can take free screenings for bipolar disorder, anxiety, PTSD and depression offered through Mental Health America’s website, which Walgreens partnered with to start the site.
According to a Walgreens press release, more than 30 percent of those who have taken active steps following the screening have found treatment.
A quarter have reported discussing their results with family, friends or a healthcare professional.
Highest paid
The highest-paid CEO in Indiana in 2016 was Anthem Inc.’s Joseph Swedish.
Anthem is the parent company of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, which provides health insurance coverage for Jay County employees.
According to data analyzed and published Thursday by the Associated Press and Equilar, an executive data firm, Swedish earned $16.5 million in 2016.
This was calculated by adding salary, bonuses, stock awards, stock option awards and other components.
